We're on Fire

I couldn’t believe it. About fifteen minutes ago, I had checked the mail and received my acceptance letter. It was a bit late, my acceptance letter, since I applied later than I should have. I had just been accepted to the school I’ve wanted to go for a long time. I had gotten an email too but the paper was more proof to me than text on a screen. It felt more official.

My mouth was still agape as I stared at the paper in my hands. In a few weeks, I’ll be at University of Birmingham, which was about two hours away from London where I grew up, in none other than Birmingham, England. I can’t help the squeal from my mouth, I was so happy.

My longtime best mate, Liam goes there; he’s in his second year. I could finally take this opportunity to get out of London for good. I’ve wanted nothing more than to get out of here and begin a life for myself, being eighteen years old and nineteen in a few months. All because of my parents, I wanted away from the house I grew up in. There were too many bad memories. Growing up, I never had a good relationship with either of my parents. My father was also abusive to me at a young age and my mum wasn’t really in the picture and hasn't been for quite some time, leaving me with my bastard of a father.

I had more than a good reason to finally get out of here. For the past few months, I’ve been staying at one of my good mates, Gretchen’s place for the past few months. She let me stay here since I left the house I grew up. It was still in north London, a good twenty-twenty five minutes away from where I grew up. It wasn’t far enough but once I leave for uni, I’ll be far enough away.

I lean back against the comfortable couch and set my MacBook on my lap. After I open my laptop, I move my finger around on the mouse to bring the screen to life. Once the screen comes to life, I type in my password to unlock it. I am automatically logged into my Skype account. A smile comes across my face when I notice Liam was online.

I press the green video call button and wait for Liam to answer. I had to tell him the great news, I was so excited. A few minutes go by and his face appears in front of me. He still looked the same yet a bit different than I last saw him. His hair wasn’t as long as it used to be, a bit shorter and he had a lip ring.

“Liam! Guess what–” I say a bit louder than I meant to, knowing Gretchen was asleep, and reach over to grab my acceptance letter.

“What is–” he begins as I place the piece of paper in front of the camera so he could see.

“You got in?! That’s great, babe! Can’t wait to see you here in a few weeks!” he exclaims happily.

“Sure did, Li! I’m anxious to get there; I can’t wait to see you either!” I tell him with a smile and set the letter on the couch beside me.

“You’re going to love it here, babe,” he tells me with a smile.

“Hope so,” I reply with a smile.

“You will, Ash,” he tells me.

“Any idea on where you’re staying once you get here?” he asks after we talk for a few minutes about a bunch of random things.

“In a dorm most likely,” I laugh and continue, “Why, Li?” I ask and smile at his question. He was weird but so was I, which was why we were close as we were. Have been the past few years, we’ve known each other since we were ten.

“Just curious, y’know, since, it’s almost the end of…July, I think, if there aren’t any dorms left, you could move in with me and my mate Harry, we have more than enough room,” he finishes with a slight smile.

“Are you sure, Li? I don’t want to intrude…” I trail off and shift my eyes away from the screen on my MacBook and bite my lip. I need to get that done, ASAP, so I don’t forget! I think to myself and let out a sigh.

“You won’t be intruding at all, Ash, I promise you that,” he says. I let out a sigh and reply with a simple ‘okay’.

“Have you told him yet? Your um…mate Harvey or whatever his name is?” I ask earning a chuckle from Liam’s mouth that sounded loudly through the speakers.

“His name’s Harry, Ash, not Harvey,” he tells me with a laugh. “And uh, no I haven’t got the chance to yet… he’s at work now, will tell him next chance I get,” he says and I hear the shuffling of a bunch of different papers, homework most likely. For the next few minutes or so, I continue to hear the shuffling of papers.

“Sorry ‘bout that, love, was cleaning up some of my papers, my desk was cluttered with them,” he says and repositions his laptop so I could see his face clearer.

“It’s fine, Li,” I tell him with a smile and set my letter on the table in front of the couch I was lying on.

“So, when will you be here?” he asks looking back at the web cam on his laptop.

“Um, three weeks I think,” I tell him and go through the calendar on my MacBook to check the exact date I am set to be there. A few days after I get there, I have orientation and then I’ll get to see what classes I’m taking and then classes won’t start until a few days after, I think.

“Can’t wait to have you here with me,” he tells me excitedly.

“Me either!” I exclaim with a smile and push some of my hair out of my face that fell down over my eyes.

We talk for a few more minutes before I tell him I was going to pack my bags. We say our goodbyes before I end the call. After shutting my MacBook, I rise up from my spot on the couch and head into the room I was currently occupying until I left to university. As I pack some more of my things, I can’t stop thinking of how I got accepted there.
