Dreams vs. Reality

Chapter Forty-Nine

I’ve been taking my time on the walk across town, but it was a foolish idea of mine to leave behind the car. The wind picks up, making it colder than it already is since its already dark out. After Chasity ran out Melissa gave me a look to go after her. So I did.

This is why she wanted me to come. She was going to announce her engagement. I want to be happy for them, believe me. I’m ecstatic that Melissa has someone else to make her happy, even when she had no one else but Chasity.

I’m sure that Chasity saw this coming, but didn’t want to believe it. This is going to be a difficult time for us both. Instead of asking where and when wedding is and if I’m invited, I’m looking for the daughter. Broken hearted, of course.

I make it to the gate to the cemetery. I haven’t actually gone inside, as I usually find her waiting here so I didn’t have to get out of the car. The moonlight shining though the dead trees and bushes aren’t helping to make this any more comforting for me right now, but I have to push any and all fears aside.

The gate creaks open, sending shudders down my spine. Now, where could Chasity and her father be? The leaves crunch underneath my feet as I follow the main pathway into the graveyard. If I would have known that she was going to run out like this, then I wouldn’t have worn a dress, regardless that I am wearing black cotton tights underneath to keep me warm, and probably brought a better jacket.

The pathway was very unorganized, turning left and right to the point where I feel as if I’m going in circles. When I had found the border of the cemetery, I look to my right, seeing the gate entrance. How did I end up back at the start? I retrace my steps and take a different pathway, becoming desperate to find Chasity. A few yards in a body tackles me from the side, making me scream in panic. I’m going to die.

“Shh, it’s just me, scaredy cat.” Chasity sniffles into my shoulder. I let out a breath of relief, hugging her tightly. She cries for a couple minutes before leading me to the correct gravestone.

R.I.P.
Peter Simmons; A loving father and husband
February 1973 - October 2004

“We asked to put him in this corner, since his favorite Ice Cream Parlor as a kid is right down there. We would always go there every other weekend for fun, even if we didn’t buy any ice cream. It was funny, really.” Chasity explains a question I never asked, even though I’m glad she is in speaking terms. She kneels down next to her father and rests her head on the gravestone.

“She is going to remarry, dad. She doesn’t love us.” She whispers angrily, harshly moving leaves off to the side, clearing up the grave space. I frown, kneeling down next to her and taking her in an embrace.

“I’m sure she does, Chase. And I’m also sure that he is watching us from a better place, saying the same thing. This was bound to happen eventually.”

“But it ‘happened’ two years ago, though. Why wouldn’t she tell me something that is this important?!” She questions me in return. I shrug, in all honesty.

“I don’t know. Maybe she was trying to find the right moment, but ending up getting side tracked by worrying how you were going to take it. I heard it’s supposed to be hard, having a new mother or father. What you are feeling now is normal. You aren’t alone.” She shrugs, sighing.

“Fine. But I’m still not going to like him. I’m going to think he is an asshole and that he is just trying to get with my mom because he is desperate.” She mutters, wiping her tears away.

“How do you know that if you haven’t even spoken to him yet?” I whisper, moving a stray hair from her face. “Let’s give him a chance, first. If he turns out to be what you thought, then by all means all aboard the pain train, destination him.” I joke, hoping to get a laugh out. She smiles and nods, wiping her face entirely.

“Alright. Deal.” I let her go to let her collect herself. “Let’s go back. I got to find out some answers.” She stands and sticks her hand out for me. I take it and she pulls me up. With one last talk to her father, we walk out of the cemetery and start the journey back.

“By the way, before all this happened, what happened with the guys and Harry’s laptop?” She reminds me with a smile.

I explained to her what had occurred and starts to laugh at how immature they can be, but at least she is happy again, well, for now. When we had arrived back at her house, all of the cars were still parked on the street, meaning the entire family was still inside.

Chasity opens the door and lets us in. We see that everyone had migrated to the living room where glasses of wine was being served and cheery conversations. Melissa sees us and quickly comes toward us, hugging us both.

“Oh, thank goodness you are alright. Chasity. I did mean to tell you, honestly, but we’ve been so caught up in-”

“Mom, we can talk about it later.. It’s okay.” Melissa looks confused for a moment, eyeing between Chasity and I. I nod, hoping she understands.

“Alright.. Well, could I offer you a drink, age appropriate?” She asks, leaving the topic there. We nod at the same time and follow her to the kitchen.

The next morning I offered Chasity a ride to school instead of having her take the bus, and of course she said yes. The glares from obvious Directioners was starting to get to us. I parked the car in front of her house, which still had streamers and confetti all over the yard. Guess the party ended late. My phone vibrates. I can only think that it’s Chasity telling me she is on her way down, but to my surprise it’s Harry.

From: Curls:
Hello Love, I hope you are having a good morning. I haven’t gotten a response from you about my last tweet, but I’m sure you have seen it. If you haven’t, let me explain now that I’m not gay, I swear. Ignore all of the ‘Larry’ shippers tweeting you nonsense, Louis just broke my laptop with his weight, he’s such a fatty. :P I love you and hope you have a good day! :) x

I smile widely as I can practically hear him telling me this in my head. I miss him already.

To: Curls:
I figured :P Thank you and the same to you! :D x

A minute or so later I get a phone call from Harry himself.

“Hello?” I answer with a small laugh.

“Did you say what I thought you meant by that?” He immediately asks, making me confused.

“What are you talking about?” I scrunch my face up a bit.

“When you said ‘the same to you’, was that your way of saying you love me?” I can see his dimpled smile from his voice. Ohh, I get it. I don’t want to say no, but then that will make him think that I don’t even when I do. Wait, do I? Duh. Of course you do, silly.

“Course.” I smile, picking off a small loose thread from my jean pants. “Do you want me to say-”

“NO!” He quickly yells, cutting me off. “I mean, not yet. That’s for something in person. I have to go, though. But I love you too, sweetheart.” He says in a happy tone, making me laugh.

“Okay.. Bye then, have a good day with the guys. Tell them I said hello, yeah?”

“I will.” He chuckles. “You too.” He says before hanging up.

As if on cue Chasity emerged from her house, eyes glued to her phone. Melissa appears at the door, waving to Chasity but not getting a response from her. She sees me and waves again. I politely wave in return. Feeling somewhat satisfied, she closes the door to the house.

Chasity opens the door blindly and steps in, bag thrown to the back, no doubt a pencil or two snapped inside.

“Morning.” I tell her once she is buckled in. She doesn’t look up from her phone but mutters a hello in return. “You okay?” I cautiously ask, turning the car on.

“Yeah. I’m good.” She mumbles.

“How’d it go with, you know?” I look behind me to make sure there were no cars coming before pulling back into the road.

“Good.”

“Chasity…” I sigh, knowing that I won’t get anything out of her unless I push it.

“What? What do you expect me to say? I just found out that my mom is getting married to someone that she had kept a secret from me, for two years! What do you expect me to say, ‘Oh, that’s great mom!’ Well I’m not.” She suddenly yells, making my eyes go wide, but I don’t stand down.

“That doesn’t answer my question, though.” I tell her with a shrug.

“Oh shut up.. I’ll tell you later on. After school.”“Lunch.” I bargain. I hear her scoff, I can tell she rolled her eyes.

“Fine, I’ll tell you at lunch.” I smile at how easy we get along. “Oh by the way, my mom wanted me to give this to you.” She reaches into her coat pocket and pulls out an envelope decorated in colorful prints and my last name written in cursive in the center.

“It's your invitation to the wedding. There’s no set date yet but she just wants you to know you’re invited, as well as your family. And your plus one” She smirks, finally showing a positive emotion, this time making me roll my eyes. By the time ‘lunch’ came around, she was quick to change subjects, since all of our other friends were here as well.

“Chase, I drove by your place this morning and I saw party stuff all over the front of your house. Didn’t know you threw a party last night. Why wasn’t I invited?” Scott complains, taking a french fry from her plate. For once she didn’t flinch, punch, or even slapped his hand away.

“It wasn’t a fucking party, dipshit. My mom was having a family reunion. And you should know how intense our parties get.” Which is why I always leave early, using school as my excuse.

“True. But I think I saw Amber there, so it was a party you liar.” He smirks cockily, taking another fry.

“Can you stop taking my god damn fries?” She yanks her plate from his reach, only getting a pair of rolling eyes in return. “She was invited by my mom. I didn’t know she was coming.” She looks at me, and I smile halfway without having any of my food spill out of my mouth. She smiles as well and shakes her head.

“Alright, alright. What was the reunion about?” Daniella asks after taking a sip of her water.

“Just some family stuff.” She quickly shrugs off.

“Chasity…” I lightly scold without looking up at her. I can feel her gaze at me but she continues either way.

“Fine. My mom got engaged.” She tells everyone at the table, receiving a collective gasp.

“Are you serious? I didn’t think she was seeing anyone. Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because she didn’t tell me. For two years.” She fake smiles, stabbing her food with the plastic fork.

“She’s been engaged for two years?! Are you kidding?!”

“No, she’s just been seeing him for two years.” I explain. They all nod in understanding.

“Great mom, huh.” Chasity mutters under her breath.

“Well did she explain herself why?” Scott asks, moving from his seat to between Chasity and I.

“Yeah, she was just nervous on how I would react. We talked. It’s all good now. I’m the maid of honor.” She rolls her eyes.

“Ooh, I just adore weddings. Can I please be the Flower Girl?” Daniella asks, clasping her hands together.

“I’ll ask. But I don’t know for sure. I don’t know what details they are working out on at the moment, but I’ll get back to you on that.”

“Well, if she gets a shot at being the flower girl, I’ll be the ring bearer.” Scott nudges her slightly before leaning against me. I pat his head, already knowing what her response is. They aren’t exactly best friends forever, but are on equal terms to not be at each other’s throats.

“Definitely not.” She quickly responds, flicking his arm. “And get off of her, will you? You are going to suffocate her.” She tugs him off of me. Personally, I’ve known him since middle school, so I’m used to being a resting place for him.

“Whatev’s. She doesn’t mind. Right?” He asks, going back to the same position as before. I shake my head as I take another bite of my sandwich, unable to speak without sounding gross. “See? She knows me.” He says, getting into a more comfortable position by wiggling around. He rested against the arm holding up my sandwich, so I was not able to take a bite of it. Oh well.

Chasity’s phone vibrates, and she is quick to open her phone and respond to whomever reached her. I couldn’t help but notice that she was smiling a bit, before realizing that she was and fighting to get it off of her face.

“Who you texting, Chase?” I ask, setting the delicious- well as good as the cafeteria food can get- down onto the plate and watch her facial reaction.

“No one. Just somebody.” She presses her lips into a fine line before putting her phone away.

"Because that is an answer." Daniella jokes.

“Is it Niall?” I whisper so that the table hears us. Scott groans, gets off of me, and returns to his seat and finishes his food. He isn’t a One Direction fan and doesn’t really approve of us seeing them, but he has gotten used to it so it’s okay now.

“Yeah.”

“Did you tell him what happened?” She nods. “Does he know everything?” She shakes her head. “About the engagement?” She nods. “About your first father?” I dare ask. She hesitates before shaking her head.

“He’s just excited because he loves weddings.”

“See, weddings are great.” Daniella chirps in, grinning from ear to ear.

“Are you going to tell him eventually?” I ask, knowing that Niall has to hear the full story.

“Someday, but not soon.”
