Dreams vs. Reality

Chapter Eighteen

Amber’s POV

“I’m going to go clock in and get my apron in the back room. I’ll be back. Want anything in the meantime?” I asked Liam while walking slowly to the back room backwards. He looked up at our menu.

“Give me a minute. I’ll think about it. Go ahead and do what you have to do.” He said, smiling. I sent one back, and made my way to the back room. Once the door closed behind me, I walked over to the hung aprons, took the red checkered print off the hook and wrapped it around my waist, tying it behind me blindly. The door then swung open. Immediately I thought it was Chasity, since she should be here by now.

“Chase, great timing, I need to tell you something about-” I started but was cut off by someone yanking my hair back forcefully. It wasn’t in a ponytail, so it was pulled by the fistful. I winced at the intense pain, trying not to yell out as I looked to see Mr. Sanchez looking at me fiercely.

“I don’t want you trying to flirt with him. OR anyone.” He said quietly.

“I wasn’t—” I started but he pulled my hair back again.

“Don’t interrupt me! I know who he is, that Liam fellow. His friends are not that far behind, I know it. Treat them with respect, and don’t blow this.” He paused. “I’ve been seeing that you tend to spill your orders frequently. If I see one more spilled order…” He yanks down on my hair even harder, making me incline back farther, as he inclined his head next to my ear. I was sure that he must have pulled some hair out of their sockets by now. I shrieked in the pain, my eyes slowly watering.

“Get the picture?” He snarls in my ear. I nod my head, ignoring the pain shooting up my neck. He pulls down on my hair again as he let go, making me topple to the ground on my back. I massaged my scalp, letting the pain flow out slowly. I eventually just took it out of the ponytail and let it fall to the right side of my face.

“Go take his order. Then come right back.” He ordered me. I nodded frantically before scrambling to my feet, flying out the door to an awaiting Liam. He looks up at me with a smile.

“Did you decide yet?” I ask him politely, knowing that Mr. Sanchez is listening.

“Yeah, just give me a latte.” He said. I nodded and put it into the register before leaving it to make the latte. As I reached for the lid, I felt Mr. Sanchez’s cold hard glare on my back. I turned to face the door, seeing him peek his head out of the creak of the door, eyeing me. I returned to register, punching in final numbers.

“How much is it?” Liam asked as he pulled his wallet out.

“$4.50.” I responded with a slight smile.

He handed me a ten, so I put it into the register, pulling out his change before giving it to him, only to have it placed back in the jar.

The front door opened, and the remainder of One Direction piled into the café with Paul close behind them. I gave them a slight smile, but they didn’t notice because they just stared at Liam in confusion. Louis then joined us at the register.

It wasn’t until now that I had noticed that Liam now had his elbows on the counter, pulling his jacket up closer to his face with one hand and taking a sip of the latte with the other. Louis took the same position as Liam, firing off questions at him. He then looked up at me, waving at me with a smile.

“Greetings, Bambi!” He said happily. I waved at him with the same smile. The rest of the guys chorused their hellos, except for Harry who just smiled at me. I waved at them all in return. “Liam?” Louis asked him, snapping him and me out of our gaze. Soon, I felt the cold stare, and remembered Mr. Sanchez’s command for me to return to the employee’s only room.

“I’ll be right back.” I excused myself. I walked to the door, and quickly looked back, mentally telling Liam that he promised not to tell them, before entering the room. There stood my impatient boss, leaning against the wall. “Was that alright, sir?” I asked him quietly. He crossed his arms and stayed silent for a moment before giving a nod.

“But now that the rest of them are here, I expect you to not mess up, okay you little shit?? This is my café on the line, and they just had to come now when you have to work… Just… If you screw this up for me, expect to be punished, severely.” He said, jabbing his fingers at my chest forcefully. I nodded my head, keeping my mouth shut.

Like seriously, if he hates me this much, why doesn’t he just fire me already? I wanted to say that to him, but I was afraid of the consequences of opening my big mouth were. So I complied with his command. He backed away from me and walked out of the room, most likely back to his dark office. I breathed a sigh of relief, before grabbing my phone and sending a quick text to Chasity.

To: Chase:
Where are you?? Please come ASAP… I needs to tell you somethinggg!

Immediately got a response back.

From: Chase:
I’m almost there. CHILL! :P

“Hello??? May we get some service, Bambi???” I heard Louis yell out. I quickly stuffed my phone in my pocket, making sure it was on vibrate. I looked into one of the mirrors that was on the wall, doing a quick check that I looked alright, or at least presentable. Once I thought what I had was good enough, I open the door back to the dining area to see glares from the other customers and Mr. Sanchez to Louis, without his consent.

I scanned the dining area and saw Marissa staring at Harry’s back as he looked at the menu. The table was filled with her other ‘friends’ but I noticed that Josh was not there, probably because they broke up already. Now she has her eyes set on Harry. Fantastic. She noticed me staring and smirked at me while licking her lips before gazing at Harry up and down repeatedly. Disgusting. I made my way back to the register and put on a realistic smile, even though I’m frowning on the inside.

“May I take your order?” I asked them, trying to put on a smile. They looked at me for a moment, either puzzled or there was something on my face. Either way, they gave me their orders and paid for it, leaving me at the counter to go to a nearby empty booth, nearby Marissa.

"Hey, Harry. Funny running into you here." I hear Marissa say. I turn from my way to the kitchen while tying up my hair, to see her hugging him, and him hugging her back with a somewhat content face. Even better. I ignore the, to make the orders, but kept my eye on her. Moments after I finished making Paul’s coffee with whip cream, the door chimed, and entered Chasity.

I sighed a huge relief as she walks to the employee’s only room, not taking in the fact that One Direction were here, or Marissa. Eventually, she joined me in the kitchen with her black checkered apron, unaware that she was making Niall’s hot chocolate with extra whip cream and making a couple sandwiches. She then looked over to me, as she finished his order, looking puzzled.

“Hey… What’s on your mind, Ambos? You look a bit pale tonight…” She asks me, putting the top bread on the sandwich and grabbing one of the wrappers.

“Many things, I guess.” I mumbled with a pouty-face. She finished wrapping up her sandwich, and walked over to me, wrapping her arms around my shoulder from the side, giving me a tight squeeze.

“You texted me that you wanted to tell me something… Is it what’s bothering you?” She asked me quietly as she released me from her grip. I nodded once. “Well, what is it? Or do I have to guess it myself…?” She asked, her smirk making a small appearance on her face as she thought of the possibility. I shook my head.

“I found out that the little girl in the visions was me…” I said. She looked at me as if I was joking.

“You're kidding! How?” She asked, putting one elbow on the counter, looking straight at me. She was thankfully interested.

“Well, in the last vision I had—” I started.

“You got one? I’d say it’s been a while…” She says looking wide eyed at me, cutting me off.

“Yeah. But, in this vision, the little girl, or younger me, she was going through some stuff in my parents’ closet, preferably looking for a doll that was discarded in a box…” I started. I continued to talk about the vision and how it looked to her as we finished up doing the order for the guys. I even told her what Mr. Sanchez warned me about, with serving them. Obviously, she was not pleased.

We piled the drinks and sandwiches onto a couple of trays, praying that they won’t fall over, before walking out with them. As we crossed the dining area to get to where they were sitting, as Chasity finally saw the guys and perked up a bit, no doubt smiling at Niall. You can literally feel the gazes between those two, which made me chuckle, until I saw her. Marissa, was actually at their table, with her hand on Harry’s shoulder.

Her older sister Kayla was there too, but she held out her keys, and pointing to the door, as if she was beginning to leave. The sisters hugged each other goodbye and Kayla left the café. They were all laughing quietly at something that Marissa said, as Liam gestured to bring a chair and let her sit on the outside of the booth, being the gentleman he is. When we got to their table, it got silent. I put down the plates of food in front of them, accordingly to who ordered what. Marissa looked up me, biting her lip with a smile. Once we finished serving the food, they all thanked me with a kind nod and a smile.

“Is there anything else you guys need?” I asked them with a forced smile, clutching the trays in my hands, not caring that my knuckles are turning slightly white. They looked down at their food and back up to me, shaking their heads.

“We’re all set. Thank you Amber.” Paul said kindly. Chasity turned on her heel, heading back to the counter, to go take the next order. I nodded once and began to proceed after her, but a small hand gripped my arm, tugging me back. I look to see who it was and of course, it was none other than Marissa.

“Do you need something?” I tried to say as kindly as possible. She automatically gives me that look that reads ‘I am going to enjoy this.’

“Well one, leave the attitude out, Missy.” She said, pursing her lips at me, making me tense a bit. I am now just staring at her, wondering what could possibly come out of that mouth of hers. “Two, do you mind bringing me my latte and sandwich over here? I think I’m going to sit here, instead.” She perked. She squeezed my arm a bit, and patted down on the empty space on the table, before turning her head to face Harry. She had the courtesy to rub her free hand and grasp Harry’s upper bicep. He slowly leaned into Zayn, so her hand wouldn’t touch him no more, which I was mentally thankful for.

I heard a door swing open, and I immediately tensed in my spot. I could hear him as he slowly proceeded to us, talking to a few of the customers, before standing by me. When I was about to say something, I stiffened when he cleared his voice behind me, knowing that this scenario is not to his pleasing to him.

“Is everything alright, here?” Mr. Sanchez asked us, eyeing the situation. Marissa let go of my arm carefully, and placed her hands on her lap.

“Yes, I believe there is. You see—”

“No, there isn’t.” Harry spoke up, cutting her off. She snapped her head towards him, before continuing, not making eye contact with Mr. Sanchez. I softly smiled and shook my head.

“Amber here won’t do me a simple, yet very kind favor of bringing my food – that I paid for – here so I can chat with them.” She said with a fake sad face. Oh, no. Seriously? I didn’t even have the chance to move! Mr. Sanchez put his hand on my shoulder, giving it a very tight squeeze. I tried to not show any pain on my face, as he digs his short nails into my shoulder. I obviously failed since Marissa was giving me a look of winning, and Liam giving me a questionable ‘Are you alright?’ expression. I nodded once at him.

“Is she bothering you gents as well? Shall I get you a new waitress or waiter?” He asked them. They all immediately shook their heads, supporting me.

“No, she is a wondrous waitress. She isn’t a bother.” Paul tried to assure him. Marissa began to protest.

“But she won’t bring me my food.” She whines, with her ridiculous puppy eyes.

“I’ll get it.” I sighed. I made my walk down to her previous table, and gather her food and place it on my tray. I begin to make my way back to their table to be watched intently by the guys, Chasity, and Mr. Sanchez. Before I could even process what happened, a leg shot out from underneath the table swinging at kicking me, causing me to yelp and trip over, spilling the content that was held on my tray all over myself. I heard the guys say ‘Oi’ simultaneously in the collective gasps. Chasity bolts from her spot at the register, leaving the woman waiting for her change, and joining me on the floor.

“Ambos, are you okay?” She questions me. I look up and see Marissa’s friends trying to contain their laughter behind their hands.

“What do you think…”I mumbled to her, looking down at the slight red scab from the kick. This seriously made her lose it. She gets up and faces Marissa’s friend, the one that kicked me with a beet red face.

“Alright. I am going to say this once, and once only. Don’t think I didn’t see your little stunt from all the way over there, because it was pretty damn noticeable.” She points behind her to the register.

“Chase—” I started, hoping that she won’t cause a scene on my behalf, but she moved her hand down, showing me her index finger, as if saying to not protest without even looking at me.

“You try anything like that again, to Amber, or to ANYONE, I will personally rip your fucking leg off and shove it up your ASS! Got it?” She says, pounding her hands on the table, as she leans into his face while gritting her teeth. He only scoffs at her.

“Whatever you say, sexy.” He growls at her, moving his hand to her arm, making her more furious.

I heard one of the guys say ‘Easy, mate.’ No doubt to Niall. I looked over to their table and my hypothesis was correct as I see Liam holding down Niall, but quickly breaking out of his grip and walking towards us, and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back into his chest as he whispered something into her ear, probably to get her to calm down. Something tells me that they are not telling us something… I also took a regretting look at Mr. Sanchez, who looked like he was about to kill someone. Guessing that it would be none other than me.

“Get out.” She says so quietly I almost couldn’t hear her.

“Excuse me?” He asks, scrunching up his face.

“Ms. Simmons, I will not tolerate this attitude in my—”

“SHUT UP!” She yells in our direction, causing me to jump slightly, scaring the absolute crap out of me. This is a side of Chasity that I have only seen one other time, which must have been a cue on my brain as it begins to pound slightly at the thought. She can get very vicious when she is pissed off. She then faces the group sitting in the table, taking a deep breath.

“Get out. ALL OF YOU!” She yells, causing them to cower and raise their hands up in surrender, while walking out the door.

Harry takes this as his turn, as he quickly jumps out of his seat, kneeling down in front of me, before peeling some of the cheese off of my face. The rest of the guys watched this in confusion, as they did not know what to do. I cautiously looked up at Harry, before looking away quickly. I then felt his hand placed gently underneath my chin, forcing me to look up at him.

“Are you alright, Amber?” He softly whispers. My eyes become pooled with my salty tears, wanting to spill them at any moment now, as I looked behind him as Marissa’s voice echoed in the room.

“She spilled my food!! MY FOOD! Ugh! I cannot take this service!” She exclaims. Harry then looks behind him to see Marissa shooting out of her seat and standing behind him. “Harry, do you mind giving me a ride home?” She asks me, putting her hand on his shoulder, lightly massaging it. He quickly flicks it off.

“Marissa, I am sorry but I am not interested. Please, leave us be.” He says to her sternly. The look on her face was pure gold as I stifle a chuckle, biting my lip.

She has finally had her first rejection, to none other than the Harry Styles. She stomps on the ground, before walking out of the café. He looks back at me, standing up and offering a hand, which a gratefully accepted. Once I stood up, I make a hiss sound, leaning against my left hip, as the kick to my leg was beginning to really setting in with the pain. He holds his hands on my waist, supporting me. I couldn’t help but feel the lump rising up to my throat. The silence of the room was becoming unbearable, as I know that all eyes were on us.

“You alright, Amber?” He asks me again. I nod once.

“Chasity, I will not tolerate this type of behavior in my café, so I am going to have to—” Mr. Sanchez snarls until Chasity cuts him off by holding up her hand, shifting out of Niall’s grasp. She reaches behind her, untying her apron, holding it high in the air before throwing it harshly on the ground.

“Don’t bother with that damn speech. I. Quit.” She says proudly, earning a hug from Niall from behind. Mr. Sanchez sighs it off, shrugging as if saying ‘whatever.’

“I want that apron cleaned and returned ASAP. Understand?” He says to her, only receiving a roll of her eyes as a response. He then faces me, trying to bottle up his anger at the main source of his anger, aka me. “Amber, please clean this mess up. Once you’re finished, come into my office for a quick chat.” He sneered with a smile, taking large but dangerously slow steps to me, making me cower back. Harry sensed what I was feeling as I subconsciously grabbed a fist full of his t-shirt, so he stood his ground. Mr. Sanchez looked up at him, and gave a dirty smirk.

By now, most of the customers have left, including the woman who just reached for the counter, picking up her change and leaving, dragging her child behind her. The ones that stayed, however, were none other than Mr. and Mrs. Parsons. They blocked the door, making sure that no one else enters the café. The shades on the windows have been drawn so no spectators can watch what was unfolding.

“Please move out of the way, Mr. Styles. I need to have a quick chat with Ms. Hudson.” He said softly, trying to make his way around him but failing miserably. Mr. and Mrs. Parsons gave me their look again on reassurance, and a thought then popped in my head, saying that I don’t have to deal with this anymore. Or at least, I shouldn’t have to. Not anymore. I am with Chasity on her decision.

“Actually Mr. Sanchez,” I started, my hands shaking as I released Harry’s shirt from my grasp and standing next to Harry. He took one step in front of me, giving me a sense of protection from Mr. Sanchez. I did the same procedure that Chasity did, only moments earlier, earning smiles from Chasity, Harry, and Mr. and Mrs. Parsons. The adrenaline was pulsing through my veins, allowing me to say the words I thought I would never have to say.

“I quit, too.”
