Dreams vs. Reality

Chapter One

Amber’s POV

"Amber! Why aren't orders being taken still?!" A voice yelled out to me angrily.

“Sorry sir, I will be right on it.” I apologized quietly to my manager as I hurriedly made my way back behind the counter to take the next order.

I hate my job. My manager is the worst of them all but I have to work for the money. I can’t afford to find another job at the moment. I am working over-time at this little café shop, Sanchez's Cafe. It is currently 8:12 p.m. and I am rushing around the kitchen making the next iced coffee, but luckily there was only a couple of people left, so the large rush was over.

I look to my side to see my best friend Chasity balancing on a chair's hind legs filing down her nails. I stopped in place and looked at her in confusion. She's supposed to be working... If our boss comes in here again she's going to get hurt... Again. With me by her side. She felt my hard gaze and looked up. She waved her nail filer in the air nonchalantly as she spoke.

“What?” I sighed and shook my head. No matter how much I try, she won’t get up to help me. She's my best friend, yes I adore her, but at times like these I want to throw her down a well. Or even down a cliff.

“Don’t worry, I’ll help you on the next order.” She tells me, reading my mind. A sigh escapes my lips once more before handing the iced coffee to the customer, plastering a smile on my face. The lady thanked me shortly and walked out quickly, not leaving a tip. Thank you? I picked up the small cup, filled with mostly nickels, quarters and pennies.

My eyes mindlessly drifted to the manager's office and saw him talking to one of the other employees, Dylan. He absolutely adored him on the other hand. Dylan has slick black hair, a great tan, and light brown eyes. He is probably going to give him the rest of the afternoon off, leaving me and Chasity, (okay, mostly me) to fill the orders. My manager looked behind Dylan's head, and saw me standing. Uh oh. He gave me a cold glare, mentally telling me to get back to work, which I did. Turning around, I jumped slightly and made a small shriek just to see Chasity standing directly behind me.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." She joked, putting her hand on my upper arm.

“You know how easily scared I can get... But it's alright. Will you just work the register, please?” I breathed out, already tired.

"That's what I'm going to do, calm down." She stared directly into my eyes with smirk before taking her place behind the register, taking the next order. I head to the kitchen, ready to make the next order. Seeing a man ordering, I know that this shouldn't be much. Thank God.

“Amber! I'm going to need 2 number 3’s and 3 number 6’s, and he needs them quick!” She calls out as the register dings. Great. I take it all back then.

“Can you come help me with them?” I asked her.

“Fine...” She whined, walking back to me.

I pulled out my iPod and put on shuffle, and One Direction's song Live While We're Young was the first song, but was my favorite, other than Little Things of course. I quietly hummed along as I finished the number 6’s and Chasity did the number 3’s. I grabbed the ones I made and placed them in the cup holders for them. Chasity filled hers in the empty spaces.

“What table?” I asked Chasity, since she sat back down in the same chair and continued filing where she left off. She held up her hand that held the filer and held up 4 fingers. I nodded and picked up the tray. It only had enough room to fit four cups, so I held the fifth one. I speed-walked through the dining area to table 4, seeing the same man sitting on his own.

I was too focused on making sure that the drinks didn’t spill over that I didn't see the foot in the middle of the isle, causing me to trip over it and throwing the hot drinks up in the air above me. I yelped out as I face planted onto the floor, soon feeling the hot liquid running down my back and staining my white t-shirt. Even better, I looked up to see none other than the familiar brunette smirking down at me. She placed her hand over her open mouth and faked gasped loudly.

“Oops, you got a little something there.” She gestures to all of me with her finger before giggling. I rolled my eyes and stood up, shifting between my legs uncomfortably as the steaming liquid runs down my body.

I looked to see the rest of the popular kids sitting at the table with her snickering at me quietly. Looking down at my feet, the spilled coffees made a large puddle around me. Just what I needed.

I stole one more glance at Marissa just to see her her newest bf kissing her, and their 'friends' awing at him. I ignored them and walked over to the now impatient man, watching the time tick by on his watch. As I got closer, I noticed the small details about him. He was tall, wore a tight black shirt, jeans, and black shoes. He had black hair and he seemed a bit, no, is muscular.

"I’m sorry sir but your order will have to take a couple more minutes." I explained quietly. He looked up at me and took in my appearance, taking in a sharp breath.

"Are you alright?" He asked me. I nodded my head, putting on my fake smile. I really am not. I am tired of Marissa's actions, and my life here, but I won't bore him with my pathetic life.

"Your coffee will be remade. Sorry for the wait." I said, before turning on my heel, until he called out to me.

"No please, take your time." I was honestly surprised by his kind words, no customer would kindly wait like that. He looked ahead of me to see Chasity cleaning the puddle of coffee that Marissa made me create.

"Not a rush. In fact, I'll come with you. Save the trip." He said as he stood up from his seat, immediately making me hold out my hands in front of me to stop him.

"It’s alright you don’t have to.” I tried to tell him, but he shook his head and joined me by my side. I collected the now empty cups and stacked them in my hands.

“But, could you make a regular coffee for me? I can pay." He asked as we made our way back to the counter, reaching behind him, probably going for his wallet. I couldn't let him.

"No need to pay. On the house. Least I could do for having your drinks spilled." I said as I threw the spilled ones in the trash can.

"That wasn’t your fault though..." He steals a glance at Marissa before turning back to me. I shrug casually. This isn't a first time she has done this to me, and I have a good feeling that it won't be the last.

"It happens. No need to pay. It’s on the house."

"Alright." I nod. "But, I will come back tomorrow and pay." He smiles.

"Deal." I complied and began walking back towards the kitchen to see a grumbling Chasity. I poked her shoulder and she turned around.

"Wanna help make another couple cups of coffee, but with a new one? So we make three each?" I asked her with a pout face. She nodded her head, since she can't ever resist me doing that face, and we did the same thing as we did a couple minutes ago, but now she made a third one.

"You sure you got them?" I asked the man as he held the tray containing four cups of coffee and one in the center of the tray so it is balanced, and the sixth one in his hand. Does he always order six coffees? He nodded his head.

"This isn’t a first that I have to do this." He chuckles, reading my mind.

"Well, either you are bring coffee for a group of workers or you are just a person who needs a lot of caffeine." I said to him, cautiously checking to make sure he doesn’t spill the drinks.

"For a group. I will bring them tomorrow since they have a day off, that is if it is alright with you?" He asked me.

"Hey, the more the merrier." I said giving him a smile. He nodded his head.

"Alright then, I will see you tomorrow." He said. As he began to turn around and walk out the door until I called out to him. Luckily there weren't many people in the cafe now as it was almost closing time. He turned around.

"Do you want the same tomorrow?" I asked him. He nodded. "Can I get a name for the order?" He walked back over to the counter and leaned over, gesturing to my ear. I leaned in with a confused face, unsure what he was going to do. He smiled as he whispered:

"Paul Higgins." He smiled and walked out, carrying the six coffees. Everything clicked in my head... The amount of coffee, the appearance... That's not the Paul Higgins, right?
