Worlds Apart

Frenemies

Alayna’s POV:
“So, who called?” Everybody was done with their food and was ready to exit the restaurant when Jade suddenly talked to me. “Uhm, my mom.” I stood up and she followed me closely.

“Oh, why’d she call?” Jade was a friendly person but right now, she’s just creeping me out. “Uhm, personal things.” Jade put her arm around me and I flinched. “Oh, like what?”

“Just personal things.” I faked a smile and pulled away from her. Unlike Kacey, I couldn’t get myself to be comfortable with Jade. I don’t know if it’s because of what she and Harry have at the moment or just because of her.

“Aww, you could tell me. C’mon.” I was in no mood to talk about what just happened a while ago and Jade was getting on my nerves. “Maybe some other time.” Although I want to push her away, I see no point in being rude to her. Maybe she just really is this nice.

“Oh, okay. Oooh! Why don’t we have a girls’ night at my flat. Kacey! You in?” She pulled Kacey away from Niall. Fortunately for her, Kacey was very patient. If she had pulled me away from a conversation I was having with someone just cause, I would have flipped.

“I’m sorry what?” Jade was now in the middle of us and has both of her arms around us. With us looking like this, we could have fooled anybody to thinking we have been best friends since birth. “Girls’ night at my flat. You wanna come?”

“Oh, yeah sure. Is next weekend okay? I’m just really busy this weekend.” Jade smiled and she let Kacey go back to where she was before; lucky her. “So, you okay for next week?” I tried to think of a clever excuse but thought that she would just force me to come anyways.

“Sure.” I forced a smile one more time and Jade jumped for joy. We entered the big hall where we were preparing for the auction event when at last Jade pulled away from me.

“What was that all about?” Niall suddenly appeared next to me and I was surprised. “I really don’t know. Is she really this..?” I was thinking of the best word to describe her without sounding mean. “Annoying?” Niall said the word as if it was a fact.

“No, nice!” I laughed and Niall joined in. “Not really. This is new to me as well.” Niall’s mood changed instantly and it scared me. “I’m actually not sure why she’s so cheerful all of a sudden especially towards you.” Niall’s tone changed from jolly to serious in a snap.

“What do you mean?” I felt my heart beating faster. Does she know about me and Harry? “Well, you’re ‘new’ and usually the head ‘bitch’ isn’t too nice to newbies.” I tried to laugh at Niall’s choice of words but all I could think about was how scared I am right now.

“Maybe she’s changed.” I tried to give a lame excuse but I know Niall made more sense than me. “Pfft, sure she did. Just watch your back, okay?” Niall gave me a pat on the back and walked straight to the door. I sat down and sighed. Is she out to get me? What am I going to do?

Harry’s POV:
“So, what’s next, babe?” I took a deep breath as I was getting really tired. We’ve been at this for the whole day and I’m getting exhausted. “Uhm, I was thinking of getting the banner up there. But you could rest for now.” Jade gave me peck on the cheek and walked on the opposite direction to check on other things.

I sat down for a while and wiped my forehead with my sleeve. “Here’s some water.” I looked up and there Alayna was, standing in front of me. “Thanks.” I took the bottle of water that she was handing me and took a sip.

“Tired?” Alayna sat on the same bench but was a few inches away from me. “Yeah, a little bit.” We weren’t looking at each other but I could still notice that something was bothering her.

“You okay?” I took a glance at her but it seems that she was not aware of it. “Yeah!” She stood up immediately as if she got startled by something. “Where are you going?” She was walking towards the ladder that I was about to go up to when she spun around to face me.

“Up there!” She was about to go up the ladder when I stopped her. “Uh, no you’re not! C’mon come back down here!” I tried to pull her down but she pulled her hand away and still went up.

“Just hold the ladder down. It’s quite wobbly.” I held the ladder down and tried to look for Jade. How could she ask a girl to do this job? “Did Jade ask you to do this?” She was now at least 4 feet away from the ground and I was getting more nervous.

“Well, she said that you were scared of heights and tired so I volunteered.” She was gesturing me to hand her the banner and I stretched my other hand for it. “I could do it, you know.” I looked up and she quickly made her way up.

“Nah, it’s faster this way.” She was now gesturing for the nail gun and I handed it to her. “So, are you feeling better now?” I tried to start a conversation but she was quiet. I don’t know if she could hear me or was just ignoring me.

She gestured for the strings and I handed it to her. “Thanks.” She was still working on the banner and I was still focused on keeping the ladder stable. “No, worries. Just tell me what you need.”

“No, what I mean is for a while ago.” She looked down and smiled. I was about to say something when Jade called me.

“Harry! Harry! Come here!” Jade was waving frantically and I ran as fast as I can towards her. “Ow!” I turned around and saw Alayna lying on the floor.

“Alayna!” I ran towards her and felt really worried. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry!” I knelt down and touched her ankle. “Don’t, don’t!” She swatted my hand away and tried to stand up.

“Alayna!” She fell down while trying to stand up and fortunately, I caught her. “You’re not okay. Stop struggling.” I was carrying her when everybody ran towards us.

“Alayna, are you okay?” Niall pushed his way through the crowd and was now holding Alayna’s hand. “Yeah, I’m fine. Put me down, Harry.” She was struggling again but I was in no way putting her down.

“I’ll take her from here.” Niall looked at me with a serious look. I know that he was just as concerned as I was but I couldn’t seem to let Niall get her.

“Harry, just let Niall take care of her. I still need your help here.” I sighed in defeat and handed Alayna to Niall. “Thanks, bro.” Niall walked away with Alayna and everyone dispersed like flies.

“Yeah, you’re welcome.” I whispered to myself and felt really bitter. Why does he even need to come in the picture? I know that Niall is one of my close friends but right now, I felt nothing for him but anger.
