Letters From You

April 8th 1944
(Niall POV)We have now ventured further into France. Which means a worse war zone and letters take longer to arrive. Making it harder to make it though the day. Giovanna had given me a bit of my sanity back when she writes me. I could hear her voice when I read them. Which helped drown out the sound of gun shots and grenades always blasting in the distance. And men grumbling and griping around me.
“We have mail boys!” Harry smiled bring over a large stack. “Something for payno, Malik, and oh look Horan”
“I’ll take that” I declared swiping the letter from his hands. Finally my piece of solitude.
“that from your old lady? I mean pen pal?” He snidely remarked
I just brushed him off and continued to tear it open. Her letters always seemed to have a faint scent of perfume. Like jasmine flowers and vanilla.
(Giovanna POV)
Dear Soldier,
Thank you for the beautiful rose. Smashed or not it still smelled good. Pink is my favorite kind of rose ya know? Anyway the other nurses were all jealous. Saying I must have found a good one. I didn’t exactly tell them we weren’t together. Just had to bask in the glory of finally fitting in. Sadly a letter and a picture can’t convince some fellas that I’m not interested in them. A soldier comes in, one of my own this time and hassles me all day the other day.
“so doll face you are quite a looker and I don’t see any rings. Why ain’t a dame like you married?”
“haven’t been impressed yet”
“I can do that. You know I’m actually a general. That’s a important role” he gleamed his grin which was missing a few teeth. Kind of like a jack o’ lantern.
“yes I do know sir. I’m very aware of military rankings”
“that’s cute but you can always learn something new” he cackled a vicious sounding cackle
“I’m fine thank you sir, you are all patched up and ready to go”
“come on wouldn’t you like some company?”
“I’d feel much better if a general was out with the rest of his men” I stated trying to give him a hint.
“ahh come on doll face I know you wouldn’t send anyone else back. Pretty boy over there I’m positive” he pointed at Niall’s photo on the table.
“he was never here that’s my pen pal, Leo”
“Leo’s a no good Brit. At least that’s how it looks ”
“he’s a soldier like you and the rest of Europe. Fighting for his country”
“no matter it’s the other side. You women got your heads on wrong”
“shouldn’t talk bad about those who can cure you General.”
“Soldier or not you take orders from me and that means I will continue to receive treatment from you if and when i need it.” He gathered his helmet and made a brisk exit. Thank the good lord.
It’s easier to hear there idiotic ideals than argue. I forget that sometimes. Not all the guys are sweet like you. I know I say that in almost all my letters but it’s the whole truth. I just hope I can find another fella like you. If this war ever breaks. I’m not rushing it exactly. I will love going back to my family. But there will be a big mess to cleanup all over Europe. And what will happen to my pen pal? Where will my soldier go? I don’t know why I am thinking about it. We’ll figure that out. Soon or later. I would love to write more I could write you books but I have to save paper for later. And I’m still busy war doesn’t stop little ole me.
