When In Cancun

Just Rumors Right?

Once I entered the foyer everyone’s heads immediately snapped in my direction. I purposefully avoided grandfather’s eyes, although I could feel his gaze burning a hole in my head.

“Emmy!” Olivia shouted running into my arms. I easily lifted her into a big hug.

“Livy!” I shouted back with the same enthusiasm. She was such an adorable little girl. She had the same brown hair and brown eyes as me. Everyone called her my 'mini me'.

“I missed you!” She cuddled into my neck.

“I missed you too love.” I said putting her down. Love? I definitely picked up a few things from Niall. I smiled at the thought.

I moved on to Uncle Will and Aunt Mary next, giving them each a hug hello. I next greeted my father, hugging him and thanking him for my trip. Once I let go of him I was engulfed in the thin arms of my grandmother.

“Don’t let grandfather worry you. I am happy to see you found a loving boy.” She whispered in my ear so only I could hear. I smiled at her and nodded. That was pretty unusual of her, she always agrees with grandfather. Or at least pretends she does.

Reluctantly I approached grandfather.

“Hello grandfather.” I said while awkwardly hugging him.

“Hello dear. Let’s just get right to it.” He started once we pulled apart. “We obviously have plenty to discuss. Your father and I are expecting to see you for brunch tomorrow at noon at The Plaza.”

I nodded, wincing slightly at his stern tone. The Plaza Hotel is one of the many hotels that grandfather owns throughout the city. He even owns a few in Paris, as well as Rome. It’s safe to say he is a billionaire and he likes people to know it. He doesn’t usually come to these country club events, so there must be a reason that he is here tonight. I’m pretty sure it is to make the family impression on the public for Williams campaign.

We all walked outside to the Limo waiting. I relaxed slightly when I saw Tyler. I knew I couldn’t be too friendly around him in front of my family, but still his presence was soothing. He winked at me as he held the door open. I smiled and thanked him as I climbed inside. Luckily I was sitting next to Livy and Bella so I avoided any uncomfortable conversations.

We pulled up to the massive and beautiful country club. I noticed there were multiple men and women with cameras and microphones scaling the entrance. This was very unusual, out of my nineteen years of coming here, not once were there press. It must have something do with William.

I stepped out with the help of Tyler’s hand and was immediately blinded by bright flashes. I covered my eyes slightly, grabbing Livy’s hand as we followed our family inside. I heard people screaming my name as we walked along the path. It reminded me of the times Niall and I were swarmed in similar situations. I really did not like this feeling of being in the spotlight. It left me queasy, and light headed. I know if I want to be Niall’s girlfriend I will have to get accustomed to it, but I’m sure it is going to take a lot of getting used to. I just hope I am ready.

“Emma look over here!”

“Emma can we have a few words about Niall?”

“Emma did Niall cheat on you?”

“Who was the girl with Niall last night?”

I was feeling extremely over whelmed at this point, and I was on the verge of breaking down. I felt a strong arm around my shoulder and I looked over to see my father protecting me. I instantly felt safer and finally we made it inside before I could be bombarded further.

I know I should just ignore what the paparazzi say but it really angered me. What were they talking about? I never realized how quickly fake rumors spread about celebrities. Poor Niall, why would anyone make up such a horrible thing about him? The second he gets a new girlfriend, some one accuses him of cheating. That is just what his life is like, and now mine I guess...

I was happy to see that Jens family’s table was right next to mine. I made sure to take the seat right by hers so we could talk. I looked around the room spotting all of my friends and a bunch of familiar friendly faces from high school. I noticed one person in particular. Jack. He looked good, like always, but the sight of him just repulsed me. I realized he was looking right at me and he smirked as he saw me staring back. I gave him a disgusted look and turned away towards Jen.

“Hey,” I said to her while sitting down.
“Hey Em,” She smiled sympathetically at me. I gave her a confused look and was about to ask her what was wrong before we were interrupted.

Mr. Vargaston, the owner of the club stood up on the stage. He announced that the evening’s events were about to begin and that everyone should take their seats. I gave Jen a look and mouthed later and she nodded sadly. What was wrong with her? I hope she’s okay.

Mr. and Mrs. Vargaston gave a long boring speech about the success of the club, and how grateful they are. They also gave an overview of the events for the upcoming summer season. Some kind of council came and presented the multiple changes and improvements currently being made for the summer. I didn’t really pay attention, only clapping when necessary.

Next they moved on to art auctioning. This I actually found interesting. Everyone began bidding on the beautiful pieces. Nothing caught my eye until I noticed a breathtaking landscape of a sunset over a beach. It was unique and perfect and I had to have it. I ended up winning the bid for $2,500. Grandfather generously offered to cover the charge and I got up from my seat to thank him enthusiastically, as I knew it was all to go along with the ‘Perfect Family’ charade.

Finally it was dinnertime. I always hated eating at the club, because I was forced to eat sophisticatedly and lady like. Who can actually enjoy eating that way? I deal though, since the food is delicious. Waiters came around with appetizers and perfectly arranged salads. As a chef myself I admired the craftsmanship. Grandfather was going off about unimportant things, and I pretended to listen and laughed when everyone else did. I was dreading brunch tomorrow. I could only imagine how pissed off he was at me. I just hope my dad wont let him be too tough. I know that grandfather loves me; he is not as heartless as I make him out to be. Growing up he spoiled the crap out of Bella and I, and he still does. That is just his way of showing love since he is not an emotional person. The problem is that he is very concerned with his power. He already has a huge hold over the hotel industry, he is hoping to gain authority in the political field through William, and if the campaign continues to go well, he will get it.

In between courses many people got up to dance. Uncle William took Mary out on to the dance floor and I smiled watching them, they were a lovely couple. I even noticed Andie and David, I winked at her when we made eye contact and she rolled her eyes. I was about to turn and talk to Jen when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked over to see none other than Jack smiling his charming grin.

“May I have this dance?”

“No, you may not.” I spat turning back to the table. My mother looked at me horrified.

“Emma, that is no way to talk to someone. Jack, dear, Emma would love a dance.” She eyed me sternly and I scoffed getting up from my seat. My mom doesn’t exactly know what happened between Jack and I, she just knows we had a falling out. Bella gave me a sympathetic smile, because she actually knows what this asshole did to me.

I ignored Jacks waiting hand and walked ahead of him to the dance floor. He was quick to keep up and I felt his arm wrap around my waist. I resisted the urge to shrug it off, knowing my mom was watching our every move. She loves Jack, she should just date him herself. I could almost feel his smirk, he knows the only reason I ever give him the time of day is because of her.

We got to the middle and I turned to him placing my hands lightly on his shoulder while he tightly held my waist with his. We started moving and I avoided his gaze knowing it was waiting for me to look at him.

"You look beautiful tonight, you always look beautiful." He whispered. I fake smiled at him and didn't even bother with a thank you.

“You don’t have to be so awkward with me, we dated for over a year.” He said in his playful tone that I used to love. I rolled my eyes.

“Yep, a year and a half that you felt was worth to blow away to please your sexual needs.”
I could see hurt flash across his face at my words, and I smirked. Good he should be hurt.

“How many times do I have to apologize Em? I fucked up. I will do anything for your forgivness.”

“Can we just not talk, I really can’t stand you.”
He nodded sadly and we continued to dance, when the worst and most ironic song possible came on. The band began playing ‘When I was your man’ by Bruno Mars. What is my life, honestly? Jack gave me a sad lopsided smile. I honestly have never seen him this way. Half way through he lightly started singing in my ear.

“My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life--”

He pulled me closer to him and his breath tickled my neck as he sang. I got the shivers and I wanted to push him away but couldn’t bring myself too. Then he started kissing my neck softly making his way behind my ear. When I realized what he was doing I shoved him off of me.

“What the fuck Jack. I have a boyfriend.”

“Your still with him? After what he did?" I nodded and gave him a 'duh' look. "Why is it different with him than me?” What was he talking about? Did he honestly think he compared to Niall at all? I scoffed and started walking away but he pulled me back. “Atleast finish this one song, than you can go.”

I sighed and agreed. He sang the last few lines to me quietly. I couldn’t help but think how annoyingly coincidental this was.

“I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Gives you all his hours
When he has the chance
Takes you to every party
'Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man”

I stayed in his arms for a couple of seconds. Taking in what was happening. I realized I was supposed to leave now so I smiled politely and awkwardly at him before attempting to walk away only to be pulled back once more.

“Jack, you said I could go.”

“I know, it’s just- I think you need to talk to this guy. You obviously don’t know what happened last night, because from the way you reacted after my mistakes, you wouldn’t be with him still if you knew.” He said concerned. I looked at him confused. Was he implying that Niall cheated on me? It was all just rumors. Right?

“It’s only rumors Jack.”

“Please just talk to him Em.” He said kissing my cheek before walking away. I stood there in shock for a second before going back to my table as the next course was arriving. I figured I would call Niall later, just to be sure. But I know that this can't be true. It is only rumors. Right?

After dinner we were at last able to walk around and socialize. I told Jen that I would meet her over by the lounge area where our age group usually hung out. I had to go to the bathroom quickly.

“I’ll go with you, I’ve been holding in since Mrs. Vargaston dragged on her speech.” She said, and I giggled.

“So..” I started hoping she would catch on that I wanted to talk about what was bothering her earlier.

“We need to talk Em.” She sighed looking at me nervously and sadly.

“What happened?” I asked skeptically as we approached the hallway for the bathrooms. She was about to answer but we could hear shouting coming from inside the bathroom.
Jen creaked the door open slightly so we could make out what was going on. I immediately recognized Tara’s voice. The conversation was one sided so she must have been on the phone.

“No! I don’t care. --- You tell that asshole to come clean --- Liam, I won’t lie to my best friend --- Yes, it is lying! --- because I would be keeping something huge from her! --- It’s all over the news anyway, she’s going to find out by tomorrow! Probably even tonight considering all of my friends and half this party already knows! --- He doesn’t even deserve to explain himself --- Good I hope he hears me! Fuck You Niall! Did you hear that!? Fuck You, you don’t deserve my best friend!”

Niall? At the sound of his name I barged into the bathroom. Tara looked at me and her jaw dropped as her eyes turned to horror. She looked at Jen before they both watched me cautiously.

“W- w- what happened?” I asked breathing heavily, my heart was pounding. I looked at them awaiting the answer that deep down I already knew.
