My Heart Skips A Beat

Chapter 43

“I know Lou, I’m just not sure how this is all going to go… Yeah… Uh huh… I know mate, I know…. Okay, I’ll call you later and let you know. Thanks. Bye.”
I blinked a few times, my eyes adjusting to the bright light. I looked around and saw Harry sitting on the desk chair, his feet up on the table. He had just hung up the phone and let out a deep breath.
“Morning.” I said quietly, but he was still startled.
“Oh, I – I thought you were asleep – I –“
“I was.” I lied, knowing he didn’t want me to hear the conversation he had just been having. And I didn’t really hear the whole thing, but I’m pretty sure I could’ve filled in the blanks.
“Oh, okay…” He spun around in the chair. I noticed dark circles under his eyes.
“Did you not sleep well?” I asked, crawling across the bed so I sat on the end. He was close enough that I was able to reach out a hand and trace the half moon shape under his eye lightly with my finger. He gave a small smile, closing his eyes.
“Not really…”
“Why?” I whispered.
“You know why.” He opened his eyes, staring at me intensely. He didn’t say it in a particularly mean way, but it still wasn’t what I had wanted to hear.
“We should talk about what happened.”
“I know.” I pulled my hand away, suddenly feeling an invisible wall go up between us. “I left him a message.”
He didn’t seem as surprised as I thought he would be.
“What did you say?”
“I said that… I didn’t want to talk to him, I didn’t want him to try and apologize. I’m done with him, I really am. And not just because of this, it’s so many things, more than you even know. This was just, what put me over the edge. So I just said that he can live his life, and I’m going to live mine.”
“But, Anna – he’s your father.” He was looking at me with a look that I knew meant there was more he wanted to say, but he wasn’t because he didn’t want to hurt my feelings.
“I don’t expect you to understand –“ I said, getting up from the bed and taking a few steps towards the bathroom, feeling my throat begin to close and desperately trying not to cry in front of Harry for about the millionth time.
“Then help me to understand!” He voice was a bit louder and when I turned around he was standing up, facing me.
“I don’t know how! Why do you not get that?! I don’t know how to say ‘I can’t stand my parents and want nothing to do with them’ to you without you hating me for it!!” God, and now my vision was getting blurry. But I quickly blinked away the tears, staring straight at the picture on the wall, not making eye contact with Harry.
“You know I could never hate you.” He finally said, his voice much more gentle now.
“Than you would sure as hell be judging me.”
“No, I wouldn’t.”
The worst part of the whole thing is I knew he was telling the truth. I knew Harry, and I knew that he wasn’t going to judge me for my family or my choices when it comes to them. So what was I so worried about? I didn’t even know anymore.
“So, tell me what you would do if you were me.” I wanted him to have all the answers; I wanted him to be able to tell me what to do to fix everything.
“Anna… I can’t tell you what to do. I can just tell you that no matter what you do, I’m never going to judge you.” He gave me that perfectly imperfect half smile that made me feel like I was melting, then came over and gave me the smallest kiss on the lips. And then, with a small smile, whispered;
“Now we’ve got to get ready, we’ve got a flight to catch.”
“I think we can be 10 minutes behind schedule.” I whispered against his lips, leaning in for another kiss, opening my mouth first this time.
“Hmm…” He hummed against my lips, his hands finding my hips and his tongue mingling with mine, brushing against my bottom lip and making my body go up in flames. I gently tugged on his neck to get him to move from the desk chair to the bed, he obliged. Harry covered my body with his and broke this kiss to make some pretty intense eye contact with me.
“Are you going to be okay?” He asked, stroking my flushed cheek.
“I will be.” I responded with a little more confidence then even I knew I had.
“I still need to tell you about my little adventure last night. But Later.” He said with a chuckle.
I smiled and nodded, “Definitely later.” We both agreed, going in for another kiss.

“So tell me, how did you not get carded? Because once, I think it was sophomore year, some guy had gotten me and my friends fake ID’s. So we went into this bar thinking we were so cool and we were gonna get served drinks and stuff, and the bartender figured it out in a second. I was so embarrassed and then they drove me home in a cop car.”
“You just have to know how to play yourself off as being mature. Which I don’t expect you to understand!” I tickled Anna’s bare ribs under the covers and she erupted into a fit of giggles, hitting my chest.
“Stop it! Harry!” I finally stopped, settling back down onto my pillow.
“But it was just so bizarre. I wish I knew who the man was, you know?”
“Yeah, I’d love to send him a thank you card for setting you straight.”
“Har har” I mocked her.
We were lying in bed, procrastinating packing our things and getting to the airport. We still had a little bit of time but knowing Anna, she’d forget her sunglasses or lose her boarding pass or want to stop and get coffee. So we needed to give ourselves some extra travel time.
“You excited to be an adult?” She asked, trailing her finger down my cheek, giving me goose bumps.
“I dunno, I don’t really feel like an adult. Maybe I should…” She was twisting her finger around one of my curls aimlessly.
“Why should you?”
“Because of the responsibility, you know? I mean, there are people’s lives and jobs who are dependant on me being successful. That’s a lot of pressure. But sometimes I just wish I could like, be normal.”
“I think you’re normal. Relatively.” I smiled and Anna leaned in, kissing the corner of my mouth.
“Thank you. That makes me feel so much better.” And although I was kidding, I also sort of really meant it. I couldn’t imagine where I would be or what I would be doing if I had never met Anna. She changed me, and turned me into the person I’ve always wanted to be instead of the person that I had been.
“We really should get ready to go or we’ll miss our flight and we’ll be spending your birthday in an airport.” Anna said, sitting up and pulling my t-shirt on. I took a quick moment to just watch her pull her hair into a pony tail and get out of bed in just my t shirt and her knickers, scurrying into the bathroom to gather her things.
This was going to be a good trip, I could just feel it.

So maybe that whole staying in our room until we were supposed to be leaving for the airport thing wasn’t such a good idea. We were rushing around, trying to get everything packed and it took forever to get a cab. But finally, we made it to our gate, which is where we were now. I looked a mess and we were getting quite a few stares, some people asking Harry (and even me!) for pictures. And of course I would never say no, but I could only imagine what I looked like with my hair in a disastrous bun, wearing a pair of leggings and a sweatshirt that I think harry got from Topman forever ago. But it was a 10-hour flight! I was looking for comfort, not a fashion statement.
When we eventually got on the plane Harry handed me one of his earbuds, distracting me from the looks we were getting from all of the other passengers filing onto the plane.
“Pick a song?” He offered, handing me his iPod. I scrolled through the options, finally settling on ‘Gold Rush’ by Ed Sheeran.
“Isn’t it weird to listen to the music of one of your best friends?”
“I guess a little. I mean, is it weird to listen to my music?”
“What makes you think I listen to your music?” I joke, poking one of Harry’s dimples.
“You better!” He joked back, tickling my ribs. But he knew how ticklish I was so he stopped when I was about to yelp.
I was sort of thankful to see that the only other people in First Class with us was businessmen and rich-looking families with small children who couldn’t care less that a member of One Direction was on their flight. So we were really able to just relax. Harry fell asleep about 2 hours in and I was sort of bored, but I didn’t want to wake him up. He had seemed really tired lately. We never really had any time to get jet lagged when we were in New York, and now the time difference from New York to Hawaii… I’m sure we would both crash at some point. So as Harry slept, I got out one of the books that I had to read for school. It was crazy to think that all my friends were still in London, and that I was supposed to be there with them. We were reading Lord of The Flies, which I had actually already read at my school in New York for freshman English. It was a really morbid, kind of depressing story, but still interesting. I imagined Bryce making some ridiculous joke about the kids in the book, and Oliver going along with it, while Molly acts like the parent of the group, telling them to shut it when in reality she thought it was hilarious. I missed them, I really did, and it wasn’t really until this moment that I had been able to realize that.
I managed to read like, 15 pages. And then Harry woke up and kept bothering me to watch a movie with him so I eventually gave in and we watched The Breakfast Club DVD I had brought on Harry’s laptop and it was really perfect because he loved this movie just as much as I did and we were such dorks, reciting all the lines, but it was just normal, happy, fun.
I eventually fell asleep for a few hours and when I woke up Harry was sitting next to me, my head on his shoulder, as he listened to his iPod.
“Sorry if I was hurting you.” I said, realizing I must be killing his arm.
“Nah, it’s fine. You were talking in your sleep.” He said with a smile.
“I was! What did I say!?”
“I couldn’t really make out anything specific, but you were very vocal. It was quite funny actually.”
“Ugh, jeez… I’m that annoying person on a plane who disturbs everyone else.”
“Nah I think you’re okay. No one’s paying any attention to us. That’s why I can do this.” Harry said quietly, kissing me straight on the lips, in front of everyone. We have never been the most PDA-ey couple for obvious reasons, but it didn’t really seem like we were in public. Everyone around us was either sleeping or in their own worlds with their books or iPads or movies or crying children or whatever.
“Does that mean I can do this?” I whispered against his lips, biting down gently on his bottom lip and slipping my tongue into his mouth. He let out a low groan.
“Yes, yes it does.” Harry said, knotting his fingers in my hair. The armrest was separating us, which might actually be a good thing because I’m not sure I would still be sitting in my seat if it weren’t. But my hands were still able to travel from Harry’s hair, to his shoulders, down his arms, and up his chest. I felt his muscles tense as my fingers moved over them. My hand eventually settled on his leg that was closest to me, using it as leverage to lean over to be able to reach him.
“You’re driving me crazy…” Harry said in an almost pained voice.
“Maybe we should stop.” I said, pulling away slightly.
“We wouldn’t want to get into any trouble. And from what I can tell, that’s exactly where this is going.” We both laughed and settled into our respective seats. But Harry kept my hand, kissing it gently and then lacing our fingers together and then we ate some of the snacks we had gotten in the airport and the flight actually went pretty quickly. In what seemed like no time at all we were landing in Hawaii and I could almost smell the beach and then I could see the beautiful landscape and I was so excited!

Louis, Eleanor, Liam, Danielle, Zayn, and Niall all flew in yesterday and we were supposed to be meeting them at the hotel. But as we made our way through the airport and down an escalator to Baggage Claim, I saw all 6 of them with signs that had our names on them and ‘ Happy Birthday Harry’ and ‘ Welcome To Hawaii’ and it was so cute I could’ve cried. I made them all get together so I could take a picture and I was just so happy to see all of these familiar faces and to be here and have a whole 10 days of nothing but pools and relaxation and fun ahead of us.
“Did we surprise you?!” Niall asked, jumping up and down.
“Of course you did Nialler!” I hugged him tight and he seemed especially proud of himself for pulling this off. I hugged Zayn, Liam, and Louis, and then the two other girls and I had a group hug where there contained a ton of squealing and giggling and talking about all the things we needed to catch each other up on.
“Alright, we’re illegally parked. Lets GOOO!!” Louis yelled, leading the group out of the airport and through the few paparazzi that had appeared to a van that somehow Louis held the keys to.
“Where the hell did you get this mate?” Harry asked.
“I rented it! It’s fun and it fits all of us! We have it for the whole week in case we ever want to go anywhere. Smart, huh?” Louis asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Very.” I said, climbing into the back that was actually pretty spacious even with all of us piling in.
Somehow Eleanor had managed to gain control of the music selection, so of course she was blasting Justin Bieber and Maroon 5 the entire way. I was dead tired, but being here with all of my favorite people gave me a rush of adrenaline, and before I knew it I was singing along to ‘Boyfriend’ as loud as I could with Niall as my duet partner. And then every so often I would glimpse out the window and see the beautiful ocean and palm trees and flowers and sunshine and perfect blue sky and remember that we were in HAWAII and it WASN’T freezing cold like it’s been for months and I was just so much happier than I had been 36 hours ago.
