A New Direction

Too Much

Rocksi's POV:

"Roksi! Roksi! Will you be continuing New Direction? Are you carrying on with your parents' legacy and becoming a singer? Are your parents really getting a divorce?" Not if I can help it. I just wanted to get back to my house. The stupid fucking paps cornered me three miles away from my house.

"Leave me the fuck alone. I'm not telling you shit." I grumbled, careful to keep the cameras away from my face. That would be bad publicity. I could see the headlines now.Youngest Zerrie Child Flips Shit On Reporters. Can they even say shit on the news?

Mama told me not to waste my life...

I hurriedly picked up the phone, hoping it was Dani.

"Hello?" I tried to dodge around the paps. God, why did I think I could walk anywhere? I just wanted to get Wawa for me and Dani. Fuck.

"Hey, babe. Need a ride?" I was so happy to hear Roman's voice on the other end.

"Oh, my God. Yes! Where are you?" I looked around, searching for his silver Range Rover.

"I'm looking at you. Stay right there." The line went dead and more paps pushed around me.

"Roksi! Rokis! Will you smile for us? Give us something to look forward to!" When Roman pulled up, I opened up the door and looked back.

"Get a fucking life." I said, climbing in and slamming the door. I sat the coffee in the cup holders and leaned my head back.

"Well, damn, then." Roman smiled.

"I hate my parents' fame sometimes." I scowled, searching through my bag for my cigarettes. I placed on between my lips and went to grab my liter from my pocket.

"It's your fame now, too." Roman told me, pulling the cigarette from between my lips, flicking it out the window, and focusing back on the road.

"What the fuck?" I asked, irritated. My hands shook, needing nicotine in my body, like...now.

"You said you'd stop. I know you were sneaking them back at your mom's but you're quitting as long as I'm around."

"Roman..." I started.

"Don't 'Roman' me. If you start again, I'll take 'em all away." He said. God, he's so much like my dad, it's scary. I don't know how he doesn't like him.

“Fine. At least stop at the house so we can get Dani.” I said, leaning back and crossing my arms. He always makes me feel like a little kid. His “dad complex” is so annoying sometimes.

“Why are we getting Dani?” He asked, turning the corner.

“Her dad won’t let her see Lazarus and as long as my dad doesn’t know that’s where we’re going, he won’t tell Lou. They haven’t talked in almost two weeks.”

“Echo? Lazarus Echo?” He stopped in front of my house and looked at me.

“Yeah. You know him?”

“Yeah. He used to work for me. And then he dropped… said he needed something better than what he was doing.” I smiled, recalling the one time I’d met Lazarus. I was giving him a message from Dani. He seemed like the type to try and get his life back on track.

“Makes sense. I’ll be right back. Go park next door. I don’t want my dad knowing I’m back around you.” I smiled, knowing he knew what I meant. If my dad saw him again, he’d probably shoot him. I kissed him softly and then went in to get Dani.

“Dani!” I called, running up the stairs to my room.

“Yeah?” She called, leaving the bathroom. She must have just gotten dressed.

“Hey, I got you Wawa but we’re gonna go.”

“Go where?” She asked, grabbing her phone.

“It’s a surprise.” I smiled. We were almost to the door when my dad called for me.

“Rox, is that you?”

“Yeah, Dad. We’re leaving.” I screamed up the stairs.

“Wait, no. I told you that Madison was coming for dinner.” He said, appearing from his room. He was shaving. Primping for Madison, I guess.

“Dad, I’m not gonna sit through dinner with her.”

“You are if I say you are. You can go out but be back by dinner. Or else.”

“Or else what?” I laughed. My dad wouldn’t hurt a fly. If he thought I believed I’d get in trouble for skipping out on dinner with Madison, he was mistaken. No matter how hard he tried, I would never like her. And no matter how hard she tried, she would never replace my mom.

“You’ll see.” He smirked, turning to leave.

“We’ll be back by dinner, Mr. Malik.” Dani smiled before grabbing my arm and leading us through the door.

“Why do parents always assume you’re the good kid?” I asked, smiling at Dani as we made our way down the walkway.

“Maybe because I’m not covered in tattoos.” She teased, nudging my arm. “What kind of car am I looking for?”

“Fair enough. And we’re catching a ride with Roman. Silver Range Rover.” I pointed across the street where he’d parked.

“Hey, Roman.” She said, climbing in the back.

“Dani.” He smiled back at her, showing his pearly whites.

“How ya been?”

“Good. I guess.” He smiled, He hadn’t been arrested again, so that was good. We weren’t together… or anywhere near really. We just occasionally hooked up. We liked the company of each other. Yeah, that’s what it was. He might have sold drugs, but he didn’t use. He says you can’t use if you’re gonna sell. That’s why he didn’t even want me smoking.

“Awesome.” I’d had Dani and Roman meet one night when we snuck out. I needed my best friend to know my… special friend and she arranged the same with me and Lazarus.

“Will you finally tell me what happened at your mom’s?” Roman said, breaking the silence that had settled in after we started driving.

“Yeah, you never told me, either.” Dani added. God, this was a story I’d rather not share.

“Fine.” I sighed heavily before telling them the “surprise” my mom had planned to show me.

“Mom?” I looked at the blonde head of hair in front of me. Jesy had dropped me off at some pier and there was no one else around besides me and the blonde lady.

“Roksi?” She smiled, turning to face me. Her hair was pure blonde, lacking the psychedelic colors it used to and she looked older but besides for that, it was the same Mom I’d known and loved.

“Mom!” I smiled and ran toward her, wrapping her in a bone crushing hug. Two months is too long to not see my mom.

“How have you been?” She asked when I finally pulled back.

“Uhm, I’ve been okay. You?”

“I’ve missed you. But everything is better… I heard you girls all got together and sang for your father’s anniversary?” She smiled. But I noticed the pain behind it. My father, she called him. I remember when she still called him Zayn or honey or something like that.

“How’s the fashion line?” I asked, finally feeling awkward as we stared out at the blue sea.

“It’s good. I have some stuff for you. But that’s not what I wanted you here for. I wanted to show you something.” She started walking toward the very edge of the pier. Her eyes were almost unseeing, as if mesmerized by the beautiful, unknown water.

“Well, what did you want to show me? There’s nothing here.” I looked around. We were alone except for the pier, the sea, and the occasional cawing of the seagulls in the sky.

“Look up.” I did as she told me to. She stood alongside me, looking up, too. “What do you see?” She twirled her wedding band around her finger. I smiled at the fact that she still wore it and looked up, again.

“I see… the sun setting.” And it was beautiful. The sky was orange and pink and a soft blue where the horizon danced with the surface of the water.

“Twenty five years ago, your father brought me here on our first date. He didn’t have any idea what to do. He was so afraid to step off the pier that we had a picnic up there, where the pier’s boards meet the sand.” She said, pointing to where she had talked about.

“That’s so cute…” I murmured, but not loud enough for her to hear me.

“When I finally got him to come closer, we sat at the edge with our feet in the water—well my feet were in the water—and he sang me “Let Me Love You” as we watched the sun set.” I smiled at the picture playing in my head. It wouldn’t be too hard to get them back together. My mom still loved my dad. I could tell by the way she glowed when she talked about him. I’m sure he felt the same, too.

“I remember every detail about that day. It was right after my dad had left… and it was good to have a nice fairytale day for once. That’s exactly what it felt like… a fairytale. And when he kissed me in the rain… I knew I was falling hard.”

“Dad kissed you in the rain?” I asked, smiling as she twirled her ring again.

“Yeah. And it was perfect, too. I don’t know how we ended up here… getting divorced. It was just… the fame, the cameras, the pressure… it got to us so much that we took out our frustration on our relationship.” She ran her hands along the railing that was keeping her from falling in the water.

“Do you still love him?” I cocked my head to look at her. I bet we looked like a weird pair. Two short girls from the back. I was only about my mom’s height and we were perfect opposites. Blonde hair to black, tattooed skin to clear, we wouldn’t be guessed for a mother and daughter.

“I always will.” She muttered. “But it doesn’t matter if we can’t work together… if he doesn’t love me back.” She looked down and wiped away her tear right as it slipped from her eye. I hugged her again.

“Don’t cry, Mom.”

“I’m fine. I promise. But do me a favor, will you?” She said, pulling away from me.

“Anything.” I shook my head, happy I was finally back with my mom.

“Keep this safe for me… just in case.” She pulled off her wedding ring and put it in my hand. The way she said “just in case” gave me hope that I could get them back together.

I just stared down at the ring for a while until she curled my fingers around it.

“Anyway, I heard you’re taking up music, again?” She was quick to change the subject. I just kept staring at my hand, as if the ring had lit itself on fire and was burning through my palm.

By the time I’d relayed the story to them, we had pulled up at The Clubhouse. I wanted to keep the little part about the ring to myself so I just left that out.

“Why are we here?” Dani asked, finishing the rest of her coffee. I picked up mine and smiled, looking down at the cup.

“You’ll see. And don’t you dare spoil it, Roman.” I glared at him after sipping my latte.

“I won’t!” He threw his hands up and then turned the car off. As soon as we opened the doors and she caught sight of him, Dani screeched and threw her arms around Lazarus.

“Oh, my God! I’m so sorry about my dad! I’m sorry I couldn’t talk to you! My dad warned Zayn so, that was a no-go. Are you okay? How have you been?” She said, rushing all her words together. He hugged her again and then let her go.

“One question at a time!” He laughed. All four of us went inside and sat down. They kept talking, catching up on the last week and a half.

The Clubhouse is one of Roman’s and my hangouts. His right hand man, Jonah owns the house and here is where we set up drops, pick-ups, stock, and just hang out. I don’t really come here too often.

“I feel like I did something good, for once.” I smiled, sitting on Roman’s lap.

“You did, babe.” He smiled, looking at Lazarus and Dani catching up. She was interrupted by her phone ringing.

“Hello?” As the seconds ticked, her eyes widened and she slowly looked up at me through the fog in the house.

“Who is it?” I mouthed to her.

“It’s Simon Cowell’s daughter! Audrey Cowell wants to sign us to Syco!” She said, covering the receiver.

“Oh, my God! What do we do? What do we say?”

“I don’t know!” She uncovered the receiver and spoke calmly. “Uhm, if you can get into contact with Crystal Styles, Kay Horan, and Cecily Payne, we can set up a meeting about signing with you.” She murmured a few more things into her phone and then hung up. She just stared at her phone for a minute. “Oh, my God.”

“I thought you didn’t want to do it?” I asked, still heavily shocked.

“Well, I’m not sure anymore… but that’s a huge decision! We, at least need to talk about it.” She said. We were still smiling when the door burst open.

“Party’s over people. Get out of my way.” I knew that voice… My eyes went wide and I stood up, looking for the source. I knew that voice.

“Rox?” Dani asked, probably shocked at how fast I stood. I could feel their eyes on me. But I couldn’t look away from the face I’d ran away from so many times.

“D-David?” I choked out. The last time I’d seen him was two years ago… I’d ran from him… his words… whatever we had… and he was back now.

“Your dad said you promised to be home by dinner. You missed curfew.” He simply said, looking down at me. I crossed my arms.

“David, not now.” I tried, looking anywhere but him.

“You can go willingly or forcefully.” He said. “And Kay told me you’ve been smoking again? And hanging around Roman?” He whispered the last part.

“Leave him out of this. Nothing I do is your concern. Not anymore.”

“You’re always gonna be my business, Roksi. Especially when your dad asks.” Then, he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder.

“Put me down!” I punched his back, trying to get him to drop me. But I’d seen how muscled his back was… his arms… his chest… I’d only hurt myself by hitting him.

“Put her d—“ Dani started but before she could finish, Zavier had come around the corner and picked her up the same way David had me.

“Z, you were in on this?” I asked, feeling embarrassed as David and Z carried us from the house.

“God, I fucking hate you! Put me down, you asshole!” Dani screamed, kicking and punching him as best as she could.

“Calm down.” Z said, putting her down in one of their cars. David did the same with me.

“God, I thought you were in New York with fucking Kay.” I grumbled, mentally beating the shit out of David. Why’s he back here?

“Yeah, well. I had business.” I sat in the back of the car, texting Dani about how these two were the biggest assholes ever. We didn’t want them to over hear us.

“I can’t believe you. My own brother.” I said, hoping Z could hear me.

“Hey, Dad asked. I just so happened to be with David at the time.” I narrowed my eyes at him, killing him in my head. Traitor.

“This is so unfair.” Dani said to me as we walked through my front door.

“I said ‘or else’, didn’t I?” Dad said, setting the table. “Go change for dinner.” He said, barely looking at us.

“You guys are staying?” Dani and I said together, both looking at the boys.

“What fun would it be to leave?” David said. I narrowed my eyes at him.

“I hate you so much, right now.” Dani said, beating me to the punch. But she was staring at Zavier. So, we were basically on the same page. I didn’t think things could get much worse… until the devil herself walked in.

“Roksi! It’s so good to see you!” She said, as soon as she walked in the door.

“Fuck. Somebody save me.” I muttered.

“Hey, let’s go get ready!” Dani snatched me away before the devil’s mistress could touch me.

“Thank you!” I gushed, following her up the stairs.

Fuck you, Madison.
