Last One Standing

Chapter Six

I thought of the night of our last fight. It kept running through my head. Soon, my mind turned elsewhere. How was I supposed to tell Hannah what happened the night before? I had lied to her. She already had no faith in me and now I lied to her. How could I give her a reason to despise me more than it seemed she already did? I wouldn’t. I couldn’t.

The water came to a halt in an instance. I figured that the water had run cold; I heard Hannah cursing under her breath and wringing out her hair.

When she came out of the bathroom, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It took me a minute to realize that she was wearing my soccer warm up that I had given her in secondary school. I had forgotten that I had given it to her, and even then, I was surprised that it wasn’t in a dumpster somewhere after what I had done to her.

She wasn’t a twig, but I didn’t want her to be. She wouldn’t be the same person if she was. She was imperfectly perfect and I was pretty sure that she had no idea how magnificent she looked in the sunlight that shone through her window. Her legs were, again, smooth and bear and she caught me staring.

“What are you staring at?”

“Oh… Um…” I glanced between her eyes and her thighs.

“You pervert…”

“No, that’s not what I meant. What are you wearing?”

“Pants now,” she said, pulling a pair of grey sweats out of her drawer.

“I mean…” I gestured towards her shirt.

“Oh…” she paused, “They’re my pajamas.” Forget grey; Hannah's face went fifty shades of red as she looked towards the floor. A blank look came over her face and it suddenly turned into frustration. I crossed the room and pulled her chin up to face me. Not realizing how close I had actually come, my hand slowly dropped her chin and my finders found themselves resting on her waist. She stepped back.

“No, Harry.”

“What do you want me…”

“Harry, I can’t.” She turned and walked from the room. I went out the door and found her in the kitchen. I grabbed her arm, not letting her pull from my grip this time.

“Stop that!” I spun her around. “What can’t you do?”

“You know, Harry! Or, you know what? Maybe you don’t know! You don’t know what you did to me! You couldn’t have just been honest!” My mind instantly imagined that she had recovered last night’s memories, but then I realized that she was talking about the night of our last fight. We were now shouting over each other.

“I was being honest!” I shouted at her, breath hot on my lips.

“Don’t lie to me!” The tears that had been forming in her eyes took over, and my eyes were now becoming wet. It broke my heart to see her that way, but my face held strong. “Do you think I’m stupid, Harry? Do you think I’m blind? Do you think I don’t remember?”

“I know you remember,” I paused, calming myself, “just as much as I do.”

My voice cracked on ‘just’ and ‘much’ and that was it; I couldn't hold it in any longer. A tear fell down my cheek, and in the time that it took to brush it away, she had started walking back towards the bedroom.

“Stop that!” I pleaded to her, the two of us on either side of the bedroom door.

“Stop what?” I paused to respond and as I opened my mouth. Hannah slammed the door in my face.

“Stop walking away from me!” I pounded one fist against the door before hearing her sobs from the other side.
