Last One Standing

Chapter Forty Five

*Niall’s POV*

About twenty rounds of Mario Cart later, I was totally done. Even though Hannah said she hadn’t played in forever, it was pretty hard to believe. I won the first time and was feeling pretty good about myself, but that didn’t last for long. She won every other time. I hate losing, but don’t get me wrong, I had fun. Everything felt so… natural, so much like it used to. I stood up and handed Lou my remote and El proceeded to smack talk him, she and Hannah holding two of the four remotes and deciding to gang up on us guys. Show us some FIFA. We’d win that shit. Harry only bought this freaking Wii because he thought that Hannah would like it, but she played FIFA with us too. She was pretty crappy at it, but she liked it all the same.

I walked towards the bathroom and shut the door behind me. Once I had washed my hands, I stepped out the door and began walking down the hallway, only to be pulled back in the opposite direction. I spun around, ready to ask what they thought they were doing, but froze solid when I met blue green eyes. Pulling me towards a door, she shut it behind her and sat down on a bed and looked down, finding her folded fingers the most interesting things in the world. Slowly, I moved over to her and heard her breath catch in her throat as I sat down, moving the bed as I did so. Deciding that she was too jumpy to be comfortable, I started to stand up.

“No,” she put her hand on my leg and pressed me back down to sit next to her, “p-please stay.” I looked at her, wondering what was going on. Everything that had felt so natural minutes ago had now vanished into thin air. My eyes went from her retreating hand up to her face. Fingers still twiddling and face still down, she became silent.

“Hannah,” I started, “what’s going on?” Carefully, my hand moved under her chin and she resisted tensing up as her eyes came into my direct view.

“I-I’m sorry.” An astonished look spread across my face. What did she possibly have to be sorry for? “I’m sorry f-for… for putting the moves on you.” My eyes squinted at her, searching for further explanation. “I-I thought you were H-Harry,” she stuttered. “I really wasn’t trying to give you the wrong idea, I just felt your arms on my waist and that’s what he always does so I figured that he was giving me a little ‘extra attention’ since he was being so sweet all day and…”

“Hannah, stop,” I interrupted her babble. Her eyes, which had wandered away from mine, now focused back in. She looked slightly intimidated by my sudden speaking up, but she couldn’t possibly think that this was her fault any longer. I took one of her smaller hands in both of my larger ones. “You can’t be blaming yourself for any of that. I knew that you were Harry’s and I was an ass. It’s something about taken women,” I almost tried to joke, “but you didn’t know that it was me until it was too late and I had taken advantage.” My head turned to the side and I looked towards the floor, rubbing her knuckles with my hand. “There seems to be a lot of that going around lately,” I mumbled. I felt tears begin to prick at my eyes, but I didn’t care.

“What’s wrong?”

“That makes me… no better than him…” It really didn’t. He took advantage of her and so did I. I used what she didn’t know to get what I wanted, even though mine was just a kiss. Did it really make a difference?

“You don’t get to blame yourself either.” A tear slid from my eye and she quickly reached out to wipe it away. I reached out and she warily let me take her other wrist. Slowly, I drew both of Hannah’s hands around the back of my neck, pulling her closer to me. My hands were the next to go around her back as carefully as I could make them go. Nuzzling my face into her neck, I let a few more tears slip from my eyes, wetting her jumper. “W-What’s this for?” Her voice sounded nervous, but tolerating.

“I didn’t g-get the chance… to tell y-you that I’m really glad y-you’re back and…” my voice cracked, “I’m j-just really happy y-you’re hear.” She seemed to snuggle into me, remembering the last time that I had told her this. That was the last time that our friendship was actually, truly perfect. Why couldn’t we just have that back? Oh yeah, because I fucked things up.

“You couldn’t do this when I first walked through the door?” She laughed shakily and sniffled, letting me know that she was getting emotional too.

“What do you mean?” I pulled away and started fiddling with my fingers.

“I mean that,” she leaned over and brushed another tear running down my cheek, “Haley’s stylist is coming over soon and now she’s going to think that I need serious help with doing my makeup.”

“Your makeup looks perfect.” We sat silent for a minute or two. “Hannah?” She looked up into my eyes. “I know that I utterly fucked up, but can there be anyway that you think that we could get back to where we were… just as friends?” She concentrated on my face and let a smile creep onto her lips.

“I think that, given time, anything is possible.”

“I just don’t want the last of our relationship being that I… took advantage of…” Her eyes fell away from mine.

“So everyone knows about that?” I saw tears threatening to fall. “I was pretty sure that Zayn was keeping it to himself so it had to be…”

“Harry was just trying to protect you, Hannah. Honestly. He just wanted us to know so that we would know why you haven’t been around and so that we wouldn’t get too close to you too fast.” Her face came back to meet my gaze. “He said that he had scared you and that Zayn had too, and he didn’t want to be that mad at any of us.” Her eyes fell away.

“You know… I used to hate how protective he was over me, but now… now I’m really glad that he does try to.” With that, Hannah stood up and gave me one last small hug before exiting the room and I could hear her feet padding down the hallway.

I sat there for a few more minutes, partially because we probably shouldn’t be seen walking out of a bedroom together, but also because I just needed to think things over. So what Hannah was saying that we might get back to the way that we were before, but it would just take time… How much time? I knew that I had screwed up big and was lucky that she still wanted me in the picture at all, but how long would that be? I was so sick of not having her around that I just wanted things to go back to normal, even though a part of me knew that things would never be exactly the same.

*Hannah’s POV*

I came back into the room and grabbed my remote out of Zayn’s hands. “Zayn! I was only gone for a little bit. Last place, really?”

“Sorry,” he smirked and I put two and two together that he was probably sabotaging the game under my name.

“No you’re not,” I smiled back and began passing people left and right. Once everyone else was once again behind me I could hear Zayn getting frustrated behind me.

“Come on! I worked hard on that!”

“Too bad,” I gave him a sweet smile and finished in first place.

“I’ll distract her.” I was still standing and starting another game when the husky voice came up directly behind me. I jumped only a little as the arms snaked around my waist, gently tugging me backwards onto his lap on the couch. “It’s me,” he whispered so that only I could hear. I silently dreaded what he was planning to distract me. I felt a soft kiss on my shoulder. I shuddered a little, but continued kicking ass. I could feel his breath on my neck and I shivered. He chuckled slightly, knowing that he was getting a reaction out of me. A little too suddenly, he began to suck and nip at the skin of my neck. He sucked and nipped at my bare neck. I stood up abruptly. “Oh, come on babe,” his voice was full of false convincing. A pang of anger and a whole sheet of fear ran hot through my veins.

“Harry, take my remote.” I didn’t look at him; I just turned towards the kitchen and started walking. Once I had escaped the view of everyone else in the living room, I began wiping the saliva from my neck and a soft sob escaped my lips as I touched the sensitive area that he had left. I went to the side of the island that was furthest from the kitchen door and I collapsed between the dishwasher and the wall of the island. Hearing someone walk through the door, I pressed myself to the side of the island as tightly as I could, dying to hide from whoever had come into the room.

“Hannah?” I shrank more as I heard his voice. Wiping my nose, I could feel myself getting smaller against the wall that I was up against. His feet moved step by step across the floor and I prayed that he would just stop and turn around, but when was I ever so lucky? I heard his feet come to the other side of the island that was also facing away from the entrance to the kitchen. There was a thud on the floor, telling me that he had sat down. I knew that he was just around the corner, but he was just out of sight. We sat there silent for a moment before Harry’s husky voice began ringing through the kitchen. It was soft, like he was trying to make it so that only I could hear it:

Halfway around the world
Lies the one thing that you want
Buried in the ground, hundreds of miles down
First thing that arises in you mind when you awake
Bending you ‘til you break
Let me hold you now

Baby close your eyes
Don’t open ‘til the morning light
Baby don’t forget
You haven’t lost it all yet

Don’t know what you’re made of
‘Til the one thing that you want
To come in with the dawn and suddenly changes
Monday, syndicate me, it’s everyone the same
But all we’ve lost to the flame
Listen to me now

Baby close your eyes
Don’t open ‘til the morning light
Don’t ever forget
We haven’t lost it all yet
All we know for sure
Is all that we are fighting for
Baby don’t forget
We haven’t lost it all yet

Someday when this is over
We mix it up, no answer
For now it’s when I hold her
We are closer, we are closer
We are closer, we are closer

Baby close your eyes
Don’t open ‘til the morning light
Don’t ever forget
We haven’t lost it all yet
And all we know for sure
Is all that we are fighting for
Baby don’t forget
We haven’t lost it all yet

We’re not closer
We’re not closer
Now we’re not closer
We’re not closer

The tears were now streaming down my face. I knew that he had changed the lyrics at the tail end, but I didn’t care. Fumbling to my knees, I crawled around to his side of the island. I was about to collapse when his strong arms pulled me into him. Breathing in the smell of him, I let all of my senses relax. We couldn’t grow apart. I had just gotten him back and I wasn’t about to let it burst what Harry and I had into flames.

Notes

Okay guys :) Second update of the day. I was listening to this song and I was like, "holy shit. This goes with my story!!! GAAAHHH!!!" So I'm really trying to start writing more and writing ahead so that you guys don't have to wait like four or five days for a chapter! Let me know what you guys are thinking. Should Hannah even be bothering with giving Niall a second chance to just be friends. I mean, look at how it screwed her over the first time lol... she might be a little stupid, but whatever, her hearts in a good place but her judgement may be a little clouded. *rambling*

xoxo Hannah <3
