Last One Standing

Chapter Thirty Three

Walking up to the club, I realized that this was the same club where Hannah and I had gone before we went back to her house. It was point A and point B was where she gave something to me that she now had no recollection of. She hugged me and looked up at my face, slightly worried.

“Is everything alright?” I spread a smile across my face and prayed that she bought it, at least for now. Wrapping my other arm around her to hug her as she walked, I shook my head ‘yes’ and I watched as she walked us to the front of the line of people waiting to get in.

Hannah waved at the bouncer and he smiled and nodded at us. We all four of us walked by with ease and we heard a few annoyed groans from the line that was now behind us. Taking my hand, Hannah led us up some steps and to a table in the V.I.P. section where everyone else was already sitting. Two rounds of shots came out and we all took them down easily. I saw Haley and Zayn making goggle eyes at each other and I smirked, knowing that they were perfect for each other.

We all had a steady beer intake and Hannah and I had made our way to the dance floor. Neither of us were quite shit faced, but we were still fairly tipsy. She hadn’t been drinking as much as I had, and I wondered if it was because of her lack of memory from the last time that we were here. With my hands around her waist, she turned in my arms and wrapped her arms around my neck, holding our faces close together. We ground against each other and I could feel myself growing more excited as we moved in sync to the pounding rhythm of the music. Our lips brushed and she pulled me down to kiss her roughly. She smiled into the kiss as her thigh brushed over my crotch and a soft groan escaped my lips.

When the song ended, drinks were passed out and the owner announced that it was thirty seconds before midnight and we all started to count down.

“Thirty, twenty nine, twenty eight, twenty seven-”

I had an idea. Rapidly pulling her through the crowd, Hannah followed behind, drink still in hand.

“-Twenty two, twenty one, twenty, nineteen-”

“Harry! Where are we going?” she yelled after me.

“-Fourteen, thirteen, twelve, eleven-”

I pulled us through a door at the back of the club and into an alley where the moon was showing, but otherwise, the spot was completely black. I looked up and then looked over at her, seeing the moon shine down on her face with amazement twinkling in her eyes. The voices from inside had become fainter.

“-Five, four, three-”

I couldn’t stop myself. Grabbing her chin, I pulled her lips to mine before guiding her arms around my neck. I wrapped mine around her back and pulled into me. Hearing cheers from inside, there was suddenly a whole knew light around us, but we weren’t paying attention.

Long after the countdown was over, we pulled our lips apart, but our foreheads stayed pressed together. I opened my eyes to see Hannah smiling and looking down at my mouth. Different colors illuminated her face magnificently. “Harry?”

“What is it Beautiful?” Truth be told, I was still longing for her lips too.

“You know that you’re supposed to wait until after the countdown to kiss me, right?” We both chuckled slightly before I pulled her impossibly closer.

“Yeah, well I wanted to be the last person that you kissed last year,” I fell silent for a second, and I was surprised to feel my cheeks getting hot, “and the first person that you kissed this year. So now, I’m your first and your last.” Hannah’s hand ran over my smiling cheek and I could feel the absence of her touch where I knew that my dimple was. Pecking me once on the lips again, she pulled away and looked upwards. I was faced away from the sky and the moon, but something held her stare captive and colors were bouncing off of her face in gorgeous patterns.

Turning around, I saw what she saw. Fireworks lit up the night and I just registered the booms that were going off after each flash of light. I pulled her in tight by the waist and she melted into my side, crossing her arms over her body slightly. She had to have been cold. Slipping off the blazer that was making me rather hot, I wrapped it around her quickly enough as to not let it release the heat from my body. Hannah leaned her head on my shoulder and I couldn’t think of one place in the world that I would rather be.

I wasn’t sure how long we stood there, but there were still cheers and the smoke was still clearing from the sky above us. Guiding Hannah back towards the club, the music got louder as we opened the door. We went to the bar and ordered a bottle of wine and had our glass. I had just kissed her when she was pulled away by Eleanor and Dani.

Blissfully, I walked back towards our table. Seeing Liam packing it away and downing shots, I concluded that he and Dani had gotten into it about something or another. They were always having petty fights, but they were both punished more severely than Hannah’s and my more serious fights. I walked over and clapped him on the shoulder, making him choke a little on his drink. After composing himself, he hugged me and wished me a Happy New Year. He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

Looking out over the crowd, I saw Louis and Ni jamming out while Haley and Zayn were in a fairly steamy make out session in the corner. That was the same corner where Hannah and I had gone before we left. Downing about three shots, I attempted to wash the memories away. I took another one and was shocked when I too was clapped on the back.

Turning around, Niall was giving me a cheeky smile, proud of himself for nearly making me choke. Once my focus turned away from my throat that was numbing itself from alcohol intake Niall’s face turned more serious. He opened his mouth a few times, as if he were going to say something, but then thought better of it and closed his mouth again. He held another drink out to me, but it wasn’t a shot. Reaching out hesitantly, Niall smiled at me weakly and took a drink of what looked to be the same thing in his hands. I took a swig and felt its effects almost instantly, but it wasn’t bad.

Pulling away from Ni, I was swept back into the crowd and eventually found Hannah at the center, dancing between El and Dani. Tapping her on the shoulder, she turned her head and instantly showed her neon whites, illuminated by the black lighting of the club. She made space in the grind line and I spent no time being subtle. Neither of us really cared about holding the line together, so I wrapped my arms around her hips and hers were instantly any place on me that she could get. Her hand was around my neck and her bum rubbed a certain way against my crotch. I let a small moan out to be heard only by her. Her arms covered in goose bumps as my breath went down her neck.

In one swift movement, Hannah turned in my arms and was facing me, her hands resting on my chest. Grabbing her bum, I pulled her closer to me and her arms went around my neck, hands winding into my hair. Our foreheads pressed together and she gasped as I pressed my groin a little closer to her crotch than before. Lips brushing, she ran her hand down my chest and gently massaged the bulge in my jeans. I closed the gap between our lips to prevent myself from moaning her name in the crowd of people. She smiled, knowing that she had gotten to me and began swaying her hips to the beat of the music. I held onto her, pulling her hips to meet mine harder and harder every time until the song ended. Hannah announced that she had to go to the bathroom and told me that, if she wasn’t back in ten minutes, then she was throwing up or had fallen in. I laughed at her sad attempt at humor before watching her walk away.

Finding that Zayn had decided to rejoin public society, I started fist pumping and he hesitantly followed my lead. There were three or four girls that had started a grind line right next to us and were giving us eyes that looked like they were trying to sell their bodies to us. All moving in unison, their eyes connected with mine as they ground into each other; their best act of seduction I assume. After Zayn and I had moved away slightly and I had turned my head, I rolled my eyes at their scantly antics and nudged Zayn in the chest, noticing that they had now caught him in their glare. Once I was only getting short glances from Zayn, as he held their gaze, I pulled the very tipsy Zayn towards the steps and then up to our table. He was still looking in the direction of the girls when I forcefully pulled his face away.

“Zayn!” He looked at me lazily and raised his eyebrows at me, a smile spreading across his face. I shook my head and frowned at him.

“What? They were hot!” he explained.

“Man, you have Haley, right?” I momentarily got a little worried that something had happened between the two of them.

“Yeah, but bro,” he paused and his face began looking a little sad, “do you know how long it’s been since my significant other wasn’t my hand?” he slurred. My face pinched with his bluntness and then question flooded through my expression.

“Aren’t you and Haley sleeping together?”

“She spent the night, yeah, but we didn’t have sex.” Now his face fell. “I’m pretty sure that she wanted to do it for me.” He turned his head, not looking me in the eyes. “I just want to show her that I am not my reputation.” His gaze shifted from the crowd to the floor and back again. “I want to show her that she’s not just another one night stand. I want her to feel special when she’s with me.”

“Then why are you staring at other girls?” He looked straight at me, but looked away again, shrugging his shoulders. “Imagine how Haley would feel if she saw you staring down those girls like a hungry dog.” His eyebrows furrowed together and he knew he was beaten.

“You’re right.” His voice was full of guilt. “I have to go find Haley.” When I lost sight of Zayn, I was tapped on the shoulder once again. Turning around, I saw that it was Niall again.

“Hey man!” he yelled to me, through the head banging music.

“What’s up Niall?” I shouted back.

“Harry, I need to talk to you.” His face was completely serious. I knew that he got really happy when he was drunk and really solemn when he was shit faced. I would have been convinced that he was shit faced if he was slurring his words, but he wasn’t; they came out fluidly and each was crystal clear.

I wrapped my arm around Niall’s shoulders. Part of this was so I could lead him towards our table, the other part was so that I could support myself on his shoulders, seeing as to how he was obviously more sober than I was. We reached the table and Niall sat down and folded his hands, resting his forearms on the table top. I furrowed my eyebrows slightly, wondering what was so serious that had him so in a tiff. “So how’s Hannah doing?” I looked at Ni skeptically.

“What are you talking about Niall?” He sighed with exasperation and looked me dead in the eyes.

“Have you told her yet?” My stare turned hard. Could he really be asking me this? “Have you told her what you remember?” My eyes squinted and a look of disgust crossed my face. There was a clenching in my heart that was telling me that something bad was coming. “Okay, well seeing as to how you’ve been silent for three minutes and still have huge bags under your eyes, I’m going to go with ‘no.’” His hands moved down into his lap and I could tell that he was fiddling with his fingers.

“What’s all of this ab…”

“She knows.” He interrupted me and his eyes locked on mine, letting me know that he wasn’t joking around. They softened slightly as he explained himself. “Well, she doesn’t know the truth, but she knows that you haven’t been sleeping very well. She’s known you for too long Harry; if anyone can tell when something isn’t quite right, it’s her.” I sat there in shock. What was he trying to say to me? I looked at my hand that was balled into a fist and rested on my thigh. Realizing that my knuckles were turning white, I forced the muscles to relax before looking back up at Niall.

“What am I supposed to do?” His blue eyes softened a great deal he sat back into his chair.

“I think that you should tell her.” Ni wasn’t normally this blunt, but I figured that the alcohol was pushing him along a great deal in this touchy conversation between the two of us.

“Ni, we both know that she’d never forgive me.”

“Do you really want to keep living the lie? It’s a lie to say that she’s still a virgin and it’s a lie to tell her that you want to wait when God and everyone else knows that you’ve already shagged her. Don’t you think that she’s an honest enough person to deserve the truth on a two way street?” I felt like someone was digging my heart out of my chest with their bare hands. Knowing that he was right, I nodded my head ‘yes’.

“I don’t think that she’s ever lied to me, so I don’t have a really good reason to lie to her.” I could hear Niall swallow rather loudly and I looked up at him with what I knew was sadness in my eyes. “She’s an honest person.” Ni squirmed in his seat once again. When he finally met my gaze, I locked in on him, making him wiggle under my stare even more. “Ni, is there something that you know that I don’t?”

“She didn’t tell you?” My face went hard.

“What is it that she didn’t tell me?”

His stare fell to the floor once more.

“Niall,” I calmed myself, letting the muscles in my face relax, “come on. We’re not friends, but more like family. There’s nothing that you can’t tell me.” His face met mine and I could see that a stroke of pain had run through it.

“I know lad,” he took a breath. It seemed like he was trying to plan his words carefully, “but sometimes there are just things that you don’t want to hear from your brother.” Worry panged through me. What was it that was so terrible that Niall couldn’t just be straight forward with it?

“Ni, you can tell me.” He sighed and opened his mouth like he was going to say something and then closed it again. He did this many times, just as he had done when he distracted me from Liam earlier. Finally, he puffed his chest out slightly and took a deep breath, as if he needed the strength to tell me what was weighing on his mind.

“Hannah and I kissed.” My face remained frozen. Did I hear him correctly? Did the woman I love kiss one of my best friends? That couldn’t be right. My eyebrows furrowed together.

“When?” It was hardly a whisper, and when he didn’t respond right away I looked up to make sure he had heard me. He was fiddling under my glare again, so I knew that he had. “Niall,” I could feel my temper becoming more apparent in my voice, “if the first part is out in the open now, it might as well all be.” His head stayed looking down this time.

“It was Christmas.” I felt my face go hard. “I don’t think either of us was expecting it to happen.” How could he be staying so calm about all of this? “It happened when you went to call Paul and Simon to see if we could sing in the park. I went to check on her and, well, it just kind of happened.” My eyes closed as the hurt flooded through my veins. I could feel my face pinch up and I relaxed it enough to ask one more question.

“Who kissed who?” I wasn’t sure that I wanted to know the answer.
