Last One Standing

Chapter Twenty Seven

*Haley’s POV*

My eyes shot open like bullets, but instead of waking up to a warm body next to mine, I awoke to my mobile going off.

From: Zayn <3
Morning Hay :)
~Zayn~

I smiled and my muscles relaxed before a giant shiver ran up my spine. Pulling the covers clear over my head; I took my cell under with me.

To: Zayn <3
Good morning :)
~HayHay~

From: Zayn <3
Merry Christmas!
~Zayn~

To: Zayn <3
Lol Merry Christmas :D

I’d almost forgotten. We continued this way as he walked me through the day today. We were going to go to Harry’s and Louis’ flat and open presents there, and then the boys had a surprise for us later tonight. We were going to hang out until then.

From: Zayn <3
Want me to pick you up?

To: Zayn <3
What time?

From: Zayn <3
Pick you up in an hour?

To: Zayn <3
Deal :)

Crawling from beneath my covers, I tried to wrap my arms around myself, begging for warmth. I went over to the small windows of my apartment and helplessly tucked the rags into the loosely closed windows that hardly held heat in or the cold air out. I walked into my closet and grabbed the warmest sweatshirt that I owned and pulled some sweats over my boy shorts.

I cursed to myself when I realized that my coffee pot had broken and decided that I’d just grab some Starbucks on the way to Zayn’s. Hopping in the shower, I found the exact point in between the icy and scolding temperatures. Soon, the water went cold and I groaned in disappointment. Turning off the water, I grabbed my last clean towel and made a mental note that I needed to do some laundry.

Walking into my favorite place in my house, I thought of what I wanted to wear today. I stood close to my small space heater and leaned against the door that I had closed behind me. Looking around my closet, I picked out my grey sweater and some skinny jeans. I painted my nails red and threw on a red bracelet with grey accents. My earrings were a series of grey squares aligned in a pattern.

I grabbed my red purse and opened the closet door slightly. The chill of the air outside came rushing through, making the space heater completely useless. Making a dash for where I knew that I had left my purple clutch the night before, I grabbed it and went back to the safe interior of my closet. I began transferring my cards and extra things from my clutch to my bag and went to get my phone. My sweater was starting to let my body heat radiate so it seemed a little warmer. Checking the time before I threw my phone in my purse, I checked the time. I had just finished my makeup when someone started knocking on the door. I zipped my grey boots with heals up my calves and walked to the door.

My brown eyes met Zayn’s once I had opened the door, but his were different. They were more magnificent to see the least, but the expression in them was different than mine. Mine were grateful to see him, knowing that he was taking me away from this cold, heartless place. His, in opposite, were slightly worried.

“Hey Haley, are you okay?”

I tried to chuckle convincingly, “What do you mean?”

“It’s freezing in these halls; is it that cold in there?” His eyebrows furrowed and I knew that he could see through me.

“No,” his looked turned skeptically concerned, “let’s go.” I grabbed his hand and pulled past him, closing the door along the way. We stepped out into the air and I regretted not thinking of putting on gloves or something. Once we were in Zayn’s car, he reached into his glove box and pulled out a beanie… Wasn’t that Harry’s thing?

“Harry left it in here.” It was like he was reading my mind as he slipped the red beanie over my fluffed hair.

“Doesn’t he want it back?”

Zayn grabbed my hand, pulling out of the lot, and intertwined our fingers. “He won’t mind when I tell him that your fingers were about to freeze off.” He would notice, wouldn’t he? None the less, I smiled at him warmly and enjoyed the heat of his body running through our hands. We rode the rest of the way in silence.

~

We stood in the elevator on the way up to Harry and Louis’ flat. Even though Zayn gave me the beanie, I was still shivering, and got a different type of chill when Zayn wrapped his arms around me, pressing my back against his chest. He nudged my head with his, encouraging me to expose my neck. Leaving soft kisses against my neck, his arms got tighter around me. I inhaled deeply and his grip loosened again. I relaxed again and he smiled into my neck, breathing down it.

Zayn placed his hand on the small of my back and encouraged me to lead the way. I stopped in front of their door and he let out a throaty chuckle from behind me, catching my wrist as I was about to knock. “You don’t have to knock, Haley.” He reached passed me and turned the doorknob. Walking in, the only light that was coming into the room was coming from the windows. It was obvious that they weren’t awake yet. “I’ll go see if they’re in Harry’s room.”

Walking over to the couch, I couldn’t help but smile at their cuteness. “I don’t think that’ll be necessary,” I whispered. Zayn let a smile pull at the corners of his mouth before he began exploring the rest of the house. He walked out onto the balcony and all that I could do was stare at them. Harry looked so peaceful, and Hannah looked so safe in his arms, like nothing could harm her. I longed for that feeling. Making me jump slightly, Zayn wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close.

“They might be asleep for awhile.” I turned my head just enough for him to see my quizzical look. “There’s two empty wine bottles on a table on the balcony.” I rolled my eyes and looked back to them, taking notice to the key that Hannah had around her neck. It was painted orange and white and laid on Harry’s bare chest, because that’s where her head was also resting. The only thing that Harry was wearing was boxers and a necklace of a paper airplane. I giggled softly and received a confused expression from Zayn. “What?”

“Harry’s wearing just as much jewelry as Hannah is.” A smirk spread across Zayn’s face as he turned and walked to knock on Louis’ bedroom door.

*Hannah’s POV*

My smell was the first sense to awaken, and whatever it was picking up was amazing! I was conflicted as all of my other senses were focused in on the boy holding me tightly. Staying as still as I possibly was able, I tried desperately to keep my breathing even. Small circles began drawing themselves on the small of my back, and I realized that the artist was tense beneath me. I knew that Harry hadn’t forgiven himself for the night prior; he just knew that denying me was hurting me more.

I shifted my head so that I could see the sparrow on the opposite side of Harry’s chest. My fingers traced the tattoo and I leaned my head further into him. Making sure that all of my muscles were completely relaxed, I tried to convince him that I was okay, that I knew that I was safe in his arms. I turned my head and placed gentle kisses against his skin. His reaction was if he had had bad sunburn and I was rubbing aloe onto it. He inhaled and exhaled slowly.

My affection ran up his chest and onto his neck, hitting a spot just at the back of his jaw. I could tell that he was internally muffling a groan, his eyes closing tightly and his eyebrows furrowing. I propped myself above him and he opened his eyes. Not caring as to whether he responded or not, I crashed my lips to his and let my body fall slightly. His hands instinctively gripped onto my waist to keep a little bit of space between us. He sighed, knowing that I had gotten some sort of reaction out of him. I smiled against Harry’s lips and was smiled bigger when he kissed back. He pulled away, full on holding me above him, and tried to look serious.

“I’m still mad that you’re trying to forgive me for last night, and I’m still mad that you want to sleep with me even though you’re not ready.”

“Don’t be mad,” I kept the smile plastered on my face. “It’s not healthy to be mad on Christmas.” I kissed him again and he only responded slightly. I pulled away and pouted. “You can’t deny me… It’s Christmas.” Harry instantly gave into my puppy dog face. He laid me down on top of him and pressed his lips to mine. The smile was instantly returned to my face and I deepened the kiss.

“Well, well, well! Look who’s alive!” I chuckled and groaned at Louis’ interruption. I climbed up and glared at him for ruining our moment. I took this time to notice that there were many more presents under the tree, which meant that everyone was probably already here. “I was sent to check for a pulse on you two because Zayn found your wine bottles and thought that you might have choked on vomit.” My face scrunched up before I sat on my knees, straddling Harry’s lap, and presented my guns to Louis, letting the sleeves of Harry’s t shirt fall back to reveal my biceps.

“Louis,” I tilted my head to the side, “you know I drink like a man. Pow! Pow!” I flexed my muscles and with each ‘pow’ Louis jumped backwards like he was being shot.

“And if you two would like to eat, then I suggested you get off of the couch. Haley says that if we eat it all, your house or not, then you’re shit out of luck.” He laughed and went back into the kitchen, with Harry and me following closely behind.

Once we had finished, Harry and I opted out of doing dishes, as everyone was already here and I had eaten breakfast in only his shirt and he in only his boxers. Of course, he was much more comfortable about being naked around the boys than I was, especially after the blood rushed to Niall’s cheeks feverishly after I had caught him staring at my bare legs. We went to Harry’s room to change. He slipped on a pair of sweats and stood by the door as I put on my base makeup, looking a lot more put together with a pair of jean shorts that I had left here. I tucked Harry's shirt inside and put my hair in a messy bun.

“Erm, Harry? Put a shirt on,” I demanded. He teasingly glared at me before disappearing from my view and coming back into it fully clothed. “Don’t you want to make a good impression on Haley?”

“Um. She was already wearing my beanie when we walked into the kitchen; I think that clarifies her as already impressed.” I chuckled at his train of thought and continued prepping myself. “Why are you getting all fancy anyways?”

“It’s because I’m taking my camera out there and God knows that someone will take over the camera and snap a horrible shot of me. This,” I held up my eye liner, “will help to prevent that from happening.” I stared back into the mirror, but I was distracted when large fingers hesitantly touched my waist and I felt warm breath trickling down my neck before his lips pressed there lightly.

It was as good as it was going to get and I turned in Harry’s arms that had wrapped around me, but didn’t hold me as close as I would have liked. Placing my hands gently on his chest, I reached up slightly to give him a reassuring peck on the lips. When there was little response, I attempted to deepen the kiss. With still a smaller response, I pulled away and opened my eyes. Harry had a look on his face like he was trying to control himself. “You can’t keep doing this Harry.” He opened his emerald orbs, but there wasn’t surprise in his eyes. He knew exactly what he was doing and he knew that he couldn’t hide it from me. “It’s not helping us,” I gestured between the small gap between our bodies, “for you to be this concerned about just kissing me.” His expression became hard, angered.

“Yeah? And how did we start off last night?” All expression fell from my face. He was still blaming himself. I raised my hands to his face and cupped it. One of them reached up to brush through his curls and tangle into the ones on the back of his neck. I pulled him down to me and let my other hand rest on his chest. Hesitantly, Harry responded to the level of my liking as I tried to convince him. We pulled away and I held his forehead to mine, keeping my eyes closed.

“You just got a little carried away. I know that you feel bad and I know that it’ll make you more attentive when I give you signals.” His frame stiffened slightly and I smirked. “Yeah, I knew that I was giving you signals.” He took a deep breath before being the first to move in to kiss me. I smiled into the kiss and took a second to appreciate his carefulness. Just then, there was a loud bang on the door. “I swear to God I’m going to murder Louis in front of everybody.” Harry silently chuckled before I grabbed my camera in one hand and Harry’s hand in the other and walked towards the still closed door.

“Come on you guys, you can sleep when you’re dead! It’s almost noon and we haven’t touched a single present!” Louis whined from the other side.

“If you don’t shut your mouth then I’ll keep her in here forever!” Before I knew what was happening, I was swept off of my feet and dragged backwards across the floor. Willing, I let myself be pulled tight into the safety of Harry’s arms as he dragged my heels across the floor. We heard absolute silence and Harry released me. I turned and he had a warm smile on his face, where I pouted in return. “What’s wrong?” His face became slightly alarmed.

I suddenly got butterflies in my stomach; don’t ask me why. “Well,” I looked up at him through my lashes, “I kind of liked being your captive.” I turned to walk towards the door, but I didn’t get far. Before I knew what was happening, the camera was ripped from my hands and my feet left the ground completely. Harry hoisted me over his shoulder and I wiggled, trying to escape. “Harry!” He stopped in front of his full length, looking at me through the reflection. “I’m way too heavy for this. Put me down right now!” I just caught him rolling his eyes as he turned to walk me out the door and into the room with everyone else. I felt someone pinch my butt as we walked through everyone and he sat me down on the couch. Figuring that it was Harry, I really thought nothing of it until everyone was looking around and ready to go into hysterics. Harry’s face looked just as confused as mine and I looked towards everyone, trying to discover what was going on. When I locked eyes with Niall, his face turned a bright shade of red as he became nervous under my stare.

I was about to accuse him when Louis piped up. “I couldn’t resist.” Everyone burst out laughing and I started laughing along with them when El slapped his arm. In turn, he pinched her bum as well and she let out a small squeal. We sat around laughing, but in the midst of it all, I saw Niall again. He was hardly laughing like the rest of us. I didn’t know if it was the tears of laughter obstructing my vision, but he still looked extremely flushed.
