Friendship Never Ends

Chapter 10

Rachel’s P.O.V.
Christmas break ended and Stephanie and I went back to school, finding out we both made our high school’s spring musical. I was ecstatic because it was another play to add to my resume, and Stephanie seemed happy, although I could tell something was up. Throughout the first few weeks of being back, she seemed…different. She was quiet, contained, slightly depressed. Because of our schoolwork and activities, there was no time for sleepovers or long talks, which was exactly what we needed. But how was I going to find time for that? She rarely ever talked to me about her day anymore, and didn’t laugh at my jokes I attempted.
I tried going through her to figure out a sleepover date, but no luck. I thought quick and decided to ask her mom if we could. I called her mom over the phone and asked her if Stephanie was free this Friday, since there was no musical rehearsal or anything that I could think of that would interfere with it. Her mom was surprised I had called to set up something, since usually I just walk in their house, but she said yes and agreed.
Friday came and I told Steph we were having a sleepover tonight. She groaned and tried to make up an excuse, but I told her I had asked her mom and she said I could. Steph sighed and agreed. I have never seen her like this before. What the heck is happening?
We walked home and she stayed silent pretty much the entire walk. Once we got inside, her mom had snacks prepared for us, but Steph didn’t eat any of it, even though it was her favorite. She headed up to her room immediately without a word to us. I asked her mom if she knew what was going on, but she didn’t, so I followed Steph’s footsteps and knocked on her door, which was closed and locked.
“Steph?” I asked. “Stephanie, please open up.”
“No,” she said.
“Steph, come on!” I begged, jiggling the doorknob. After a few shakes, I heard the lock turn and the door opened.
“What is with you?!” I demanded, trying not to sound harsh. She was sitting on her bed, cuddling her pillow. I closed the door and sat next to her on the bed.
“Nothing,” she answered, not looking at me.
“You have been acting weird ever since break ended, you weren’t even that happy you got in the musical, and you didn’t even want a sleepover with me tonight. Don’t you dare tell me nothing’s wrong,” I pointed out.
Steph stayed silent for a little bit, then finally sighed and began.
“If you used to live in a different country, would you ever want to go back?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I replied, concerned now. This is about England. “Why?”
“Well, over break, I was Skyping with Harry and we had a pretty good conversation, just the usual topics of how it’s going and what’s all happening. But then he asked me a question I had no idea he was going to bring up,” she continued. “He pretty much invited me back to England.”
“Steph, that’s great!”
“No, that’s not great. My parents have jobs here, I’ve adjusted really well here, and if I go back I don’t want to leave you like I did with Harry!” she bursted out.
I stayed silent, not knowing what to say.
“I told him that and he said you could come along with me and we’d be there for this summer,” she added quietly.
“Really?” I said. I had no idea this conversation even happened.
“You have no idea how much I want to go back! I’ve missed so much there; I’ve been going insane thinking about it ever since Harry brought it up! But I have no idea how I’m getting there since my parents are never going to let me go. We’re only 16, there’s no way they’d let us stay with 5 teenage guys for the summer,” Stephanie explained.
“What if you explained to your mom exactly what you just said, that you want to go back there so bad but the only problem is the living situation,” I suggested.
“No, she wouldn’t listen to that. I feel like there’s more to the story of why she made us move here, not just because of jobs,” Steph responded. “And anyways, how are we going to convince your parents to let you stay?”
I wasn’t even thinking about that, to be honest. I would love to go to England, but Steph’s the one who needed to go the most, not me.
“Well, we need to talk to your mom soon because we won’t have much time left if we do it later,” I pointed out. “And since we’re both here, why not get it done now?”
“Alright, alright,” Stephanie agreed.
We stayed in her room and I got her to cheer up a little bit before her mom called us down for dinner. I nodded at Stephanie and headed down the stairs to the kitchen.
“Smells good in here, mum,” Stephanie complimented, pulling out a chair and sitting down.
“Why thank you, Stephanie,” her mom replied, surprised. “Feeling better?”
“A lot better,” Steph responded, smiling at me.
We ate dinner and it went according to our plan. We wanted to make sure everyone was in a good mood before we put this whole thing on her mom, so I made sure Stephanie was feeling all right and that she knew that she needed to get her mom in a good mood, too. It all worked out and we helped Stephanie’s mom with the dishes before seating her in the living room to explain.
“Well, the first thing you should know is that I’ve been in contact with Harry recently,” Stephanie began.
“Harry Styles?” her mom asked, surprised again.
“Yes, we’ve been video chatting and messaging each other,” Stephanie continued.
“Honey, that’s great!” her mom said.
“You know he’s in that band, right?” she questioned.
“Yeah, I remember you telling me about that and screaming your head off when they were on that one singing show,” her mom replied, smiling.
“Well,” Stephanie responded, taking a deep breath, “we were talking over Christmas break and he invited me to come back to England for the summer.”
“No, absolutely not,” her mom declared, suddenly changing her mood.
“But-”
“No buts. I’m not letting you go over there!”
“Harry said Rachel’s invited, too, because she knows another guy in the band!” Stephanie explained.
“The answer is still no, and I’m pretty sure Rachel’s parents agree. You’re not going, final,” Stephanie’s mom claimed, standing up and leaving the living room.
Stephanie turned to me with watery eyes.
“Thanks, this was a stupid plan and it didn’t work,” she cried, running back up the stairs, leaving me still standing in the living room of my best friend’s house.
